JWV opposes
budget cuts
on benefits

The Council of Administration
of the Department of Michigan,
Jewish War Veterans, passed a
resolution at its recent meeting
opposing President Reagan's pro-
posed budget cuts dealing with
veterans hospital facilities.
The resolution stated:
"Whereas President Reagan's
proposed budget would close the
facilities of veterans hospitals to
veterans with non-service con-
nected disabilities and ailments
as part of a cost-cutting budget,
and
"Whereas this proposal is arbit-
rary and capricious, since for over
a half century access to veterans
hospital facilities was considered
as a fringe benefit for serving in
the armed services of the United
States, and
"Whereas such budget cutting
would be a denial of medical serv-
ices to indigent veterans who
cannot obtain hospital treatment
and care otherwise.
"Now, therefore, be it resolved
that the Department of Michigan,
Jewish War Veterans of the
United States, opposes such un-
just, arbitrary and capricious cost
cutting measures at the expense
of the sick and disabled veterans
who served their country faith-
fully in time of war. Such action
negates the American principals
of compassion and fair play.
"Be it further- resolved that a
copy of this resolution be sent to
President Ronald Reagan, Budget
Director David Stockman, the
National Commander of the
Jewish War Veterans of the
United States, and members of
the Michigan Congressional
Delegation."

Haifa — Claiming that "Israel's,
future lies with brain-intensive
high technological industries and
not with the labor-intensive in-
dustries established in Africa and
Asia," a Haifa University profes-
sor said last month that the
Jewish state needn't worry about
American companies closing
down Third World factories to re-
sume production in the U.S.
Prof. Michael Perry, elaborat-
ing on the recent plea by Israeli
Prime Minister Shimon Peres to
American and Jewish business
leaders for closer ties and in-
creased investment in Israel, said
he sees no repetition of the com-
munication problems that
plagued U.S.-Third World opera-
tions.
"I think the mentality of the Is-
raelis is almost identical to that of
the Americans," Prof. Perry said.
"Furthermore, our high
technological industries are
founded upon the expertise of pro-
fessors, engineers and managers
who were educated in the United
States."
