High-tech
neo-Nazi group
linked to killing

Denver — A neo-Nazi group
which uses home computers and
other sophisticated technology to
carry out its activities has been
linked to a wave of crime in the
northwestern United States in-
cluding the murder of a popular
Jewish radio personality in De-
nver last summer.
Federal law enforcement offi-
cials say the group — variously
known as the "White American
Bastion," "The Order" or "Brucler
Schweigen" ("Silent Brother-
hood") — has engaged in counter-
feiting, bank robberies, armored-
car holdups, a synagogue bomb-
ing and the gangland-style slay-
ing of Denver radio personality
Alan Berg. The group has also
planned bombings of dams and
public buildings, according to offi-
cials of a special federal task force
created to investigate the faction.
News of the neo-Nazi faction
emerged when police announced
last month that the automatic pis-
tol used to kill Berg was found in a
rural Idaho home of one of the
members of the Brotherhood.
Members of the group communi-
cate through home computers
linked by phone lines to large
terminals in Idaho and Texas.
According to the FBI, the group,
whose goal is the "violent over-
throw of the U.S. government,"
takes its inspiration from a fic-
tional account of a neo-Nazi
takeover of the U.S. — The
Turner Diaries, by white sup-
remacist William Pierce. The
publication relates a successful
revolution by a heavily-armed
band and describes the murder of
several prominent Jews, the
bombing of FBI headquarters in
Washington and a nuclear attack
on Israel. The current outburst of
violence tracks fairly closely with
the plot of the pamphlet, officials
said.
The FBI claims that the move- .
ment began in the early 1970s at a
heavily fortified "church" in
Hayden Lake, Idaho, a remote re-
sort about 80 miles south of the
U.S.-Canadian border. There are
approximately 120 members in
the group, officials believe, most
of them ex-convicts who share an
anti-Semitic, racist philosophy.
Richard Butler, an aeronautical
engineer from Hayden Lake, is
said to be the leader of the neo-
Nazi group.
