Pearl, the American Jewish Congress liaison in Washington, pending Supreme Court cases could dras- tically alter the interpretation of laws mandating strict separation of church and state. Pearl's warning to the Jewish community was sounded at a re- cent statewide conference in Flint addressing "Religious Liberty in a Changing Environment." Pearl and Dr. Eugene Paslov, Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruc- tion for the Michigan Department of Education, outlined recent Supreme Court cases on religious displays on public property, the Grand Rapids school district's use of secular teachers in parochial schools, and an Alabama statute providing for vocal daily prayer in public schools. In addition, Pearl • notes that legislation due to come up for dis- .11011111. • cussion in the coming Congres- sional term includes a plan for tuition tax credits for private or parochial schools and a Constitu- tional amendment permitting school prayer. Both Pearl and Paslov warned that some conservative religious groups in the United States are attempting to erode the separa- tion of church and state in order to impose Christian beliefs upon religious minorities. The program was sponsored by the Flint Jewish Federation and the University of Michigan-Flint, in cooperation with the Jewish Community Council of Metropoli- tan Detroit, the Michigan Council of Churches, and the Greater De- troit Round Table-National Con- ference of Christians and Jews. Participants developed strategies - for dealng with problems of church-state separation. . NEWS Party answers charges R Beautiful Gifts are only half the story... A West German faction will defend charges of anti-Semitism in its choice of candidates for president. Bonn (JTA) - A spokesman for the opposition Green Party an- nounced that its Bundestag fac- tion will hold a special debate on Israel and the Middle East next month at which charges that his party has anti-Semitic tendencies will be throughly aired. The Greens, at the moment, are embarrassed by their choice of author Luise Rinser as their can- didate for President of the Federal Republic, a symbolic rather than political office. Key members of the party's Bundestag faction have said privately that they had not read Rinser's books, particu- larly one titled Mirjam which is said to contain anti-Semitic over- tones. Her negative views about Jews and Judaism became an issue in the Israeli media and the Israel embassy in Bonn is taking a closer look at alleged anti-Semitism within the Green Party, which grew out of a movement of pacifists and ecologists in recent years. The Greens apparently were impressed by "Rinser's record of opposition to the Nazi regime and brushed aside evidence that she was initially pro-Nazi. During the Nazi era her writings expressed admiration for Hitler. But she had a falling out with the Nazisand was jailed. Rinser gained prominenq.e in post-war Germany as a left-wing author who stressed feminist is- sues, the search for peace and the need to protect the environment. But left-wing intellectuals de- tected anti-Semitism in her writ- ing, for example her claim that her studies of the origins of Jewish thought revealed some of the-worst evils- of-modern society. - The Greens apparently missed this, or preferred to disregard it when they selected her as their candidate for the presidency. The party is also involved in a_ bitter controversy over its delega- tion, now visiting the Middle East, which the Israelis have labeled "anti-Semitic." One member of the delegation, Brigitte Heinrich, who is also a member of the Parliament of Europe, was refused entry into Is- rael when the delegation arrived there Tuesday via Jordan. Ac- cording to a report from Tel Aviv, Heinrich was stopped at the Al- lenby Bridge- and returned to Amman. According to Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Roni Milo, Heinrich was banned because she served a 21-month prison sen- tence for aiding Palestinian and German terrorists. She was con- victed by the high court in Kar- sruhe of smuggling arms to ter- rorists in West Germany. Knesset votes to limit Kahane Jerusalem - The Knesset voted Tuesday to limit the par- liamentary immunity and free- dom of movement of MK Rabbi Meir Kahane. The controversial, anti-Arab MK denounced the action, which will allow police to bar the American-born politician from entering potential trouble spots. It is the first time that the Knes- set has pre-emptively stripped a member of his preferential rights as an -Israeli. - . - . .
