Rome (JTA) - A Nazi war
criminal, the only one still con-
fined in an Italian prison, is seek-
ing Grace from the Catholic
Church and forgiveness from his
victims in the hope that if
granted, he will be freed and be
allowed to return to his native
Austria before his 40 year sen-
tence expires next July.
Walter Reder, a former SS col-
onel who organized and led the
massacre of the population in
Marzabotto in northern Italy dur-
ing the Nazi occupation, has writ-
ten a letter to the people of Mar-
zabotto, asking them to think of
him as "an unhappy brother, re-
discovered after a long time and
not forgetful of those of their and
our side who fell, but in common
veneration of their memory."
The letter and petition, made
public by the Vatican, was sent to
Father Giuseppe de Gennaro, a
Jesuit priest, who subsequently
wrote an article in the Catholic
magazine, Civilta Cattolica,
favoring clemency for Reder. The
Vatican Radio broadcast an
interview with de Gennaro. Reder
wrote another letter, addressed to
the Vatican this week, the con-
tents of which were not disclosed.

Reder is confined in Gaeta
prison. His cellmate until a few
years ago was Herman Kappler, a
Nazi war criminal responsible for
the deportation of Jews from
Rome during the war and the Ar-
deatine Caves massacre. Kappler,
who was removed to a military
hospital, made a sensational es-
cape and returned to Germany
where he died a year later.
Reder asked de Gennaro to de-
liver his plea for forgiveness to the
parish priest in Marzabotto,
Father Angelo Serra.
In related news, Nazi war crim-
inal Feodor Fedorenka, whom the
United States has been trying to
deport for eight years, was in Fed-
eral custody last week while
authorities worked on ar-
rangements to send him to the
Soviet Union.
Fedorenko, 77, is accused of
lying about his wartime activities
at Treblinka, Poland, to get into
the United States. Last week, he
lost his last attempt to halt the
deportation. He would be the
sixth former alleged Nazi war
criminal to be deported because of
Justice Department actions.
In 1977, the Justice Depart-
ment's Office of Special Investiga-
tions, which hunts down former
Nazis living in the United States,
went to court to strip Fedorenko of
his citizenship on the grounds
that he lied about his wartime ac-
tivities when he got his U.S. visa.
The Court ruled in 1981 that his
citizenship had been illegally pro-
cured and must be revoked. That
year, the Justice Department
began deportation proceedings.
Baby rushed
to Israel
hospital
Tel Aviv (JTA) - An infant girl
born to the wife of a U.S. serv-
iceman stationed in Turkey was
flown to an Israeli hospital six
hours after her birth Saturday
night for emergency treatment of
a breathing disorder.
The child was reported Sunday
morning in satisfactory condition,
in the intensive care unit at Assaf
Harofe•Hospital. Her mother,
Sherry Fowler, 26, was reported
resting comfortably in the obstet-
rics ward of the same hospital.
Mrs. Fowler, wife of Woody
Fowler who is posted at a U.S. Air
Force base in Turkey, gave birth
in the 10th month of pregnancy.
American doctors at the base hos-
pital found the infant had air in
her chest cavity which compres-
sed her lungs causing severe brea-
thing difficulties.
The base doctors telephoned the
U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv where
the nurse responsible for all U.S.
military personnel in the Middle
East contacted Assaf Harofe Hos-
pital to explain the situation. The
hospital sent an emergency medi-
cal team and ambulance fitted
with an incubator to the airport
where the mother and baby
landed at 6 a.m. local time from a
U.S. Hercules transport plane and
were rushed to the hospital.
