One policeman was injured, a city- owned vehicle was burned and a bus was damaged. Five residents were arrested. The riot broke out when munic- ipal workers, acting on a court or- der, moved into the district to de- molish two illegally built houses. The owners had been given sev- eral warnings to demolish the structures which were erected without a building permit. Michael Eitan, a Likud MK, who has taken up the cause of slum-dwellers, accused the police of violating his Knesset immunity by blocking his approach to the site. He said he had been sum- moned by telephone before dawn Tuesday to try to prevent the de- molitions. According to Eitan, he was roughed up by the police and slightly injured. The rioters shouted that the houses would be torn down "only over our dead bodies," and that they did not want to live in a coun- try that destroys homes. is withdrawal only option? Washington (JTA) — A partial Israeli withdrawl from Lebanon, according to an editorial in the Washington Post Wednesday, will leave up to the Shiite population and the United Nations peacekeeping force the role of dampening intra-Lebanese strife and blocking the return of Pales- tinian gunmen to the area. The Post views this scenario as the only option left to Israel as the talks with Lebanon in Nakura have made little progress over the past weeks. The newspaper ques- tioned why the Syrians, who are calling the shots in Lebanon, have insisted that the Lebanese dele- gation stick to the "laughable de- mand that Israel turn over to the Lebanese army, a puppy dog, all of Southern Lebanon down to the Is- raeli border?" CORRECTIONS The obituary for Rabbi Max Kapustin appearing in last week's Jewish News was in error. The obituary should have said that he was a founder of Akiva Hebrew Day School with Rabbi James I. Gordon and the late Rabbi Hayim Donin. Rabbi Kapustin also was president of the Akiva board of education. A photo in last week's Jewish News incorrectly identified a resident of the Jewish Federation Apart- ments as Eva Meister. The woman should have been identified as Fran Salwin.
