The grant announcement to Neve Shalom and its School for Peace pointed to specific problems facing those teachers, principals and others who attend the school for training and informal socializ- ing. While "they leave with a greater feeling of tolerance and mutual respect for the other group," the foundation added, "Many graduates find it had to handle the suspicion and hostility they sometimes encounter when they return to their local com- munities. The lack of follow-up programs leaves the graduates feeling frustrated and isolated." The grant, in turn, is designed to address this problem by enabl- ing the school to develop ongoing Arab-Jewish groups in selected communities and to train people to lead them in discussion groups, research and recreational activi- ties and Arab language courses. Israel price rise slows Jerusalem (JTA) — The first time the Central Bureau of Statis- tics published a measurement of price rises in a two-week period it hit the treasury by surprise — it showed that for the first time in more than five years, the country enjoyed several weeks of relative price stability when the average price rise in the first two weeks of this month did not exceed two per- cent. This is the first time that the bureau measured an interim period of the two weeks in the same month. Usually, the bureau published on the 15th of the month the consumer price index (CPI) of the previous month. The new interim index shows an average price rise of clothing, furniture and entertainment- related activities of only two to three percent. Food prices, not in- cluding fruits and vegetables, rose by only 0.6 percent. Treasury experts estimated that the CPI of this month would be between 11 and 13 percent. However, the moderate rise in the first two weeks is interpreted as yet another indication of the suc- cess of the economic package deal. It is now estimated that the CPI for this month will not exceed 10 percent. This means a drop from a monthly inflation of 24 percent, and a boost to current efforts to introduce a second parcel, once the present package deal expires at the beginning of February. Meir fellows Jerusalem (JTA) — The He- brew University has awarded its first Golda Meir Fellowships to 27 scholars from Israel and eight foreign countries at ceremonies marking the sixth anniversary of the death of the former.
