Bonn (JTA) — The West Ger-
man neo-Nazi leader Michael
Kuehnen, 29, announced that his
movement abandoned previous
intentions to fight the democratic
system and will rather try to get
support from its ideas by operat-
ing within the present political
institution.
Speaking of his trial in
Frankfurt, Kuehnen said that his
former writings, which had been
read in court by the state prosecu-
tion, had no validity anymore.
We have made a transition," he
said, "and our aim today is to con-
vince people to accept Nazi ideas
and to give us support at the
polls."
In previous writings Kuehnen
called on his poltical friends to
work for the eliminatiu
democracy and for introduc, g
measures to rid the country of the
Jews.
Formerly, Kuehnen marked a
spectacular success as his lawyer
announced at court that the
Jewish author Erich Fried, who
lives in London, was willing to
come to testify for his mandate.
This created uneasiness among
many leftwing admirers of Fried
in this country.
Kuehnen is being tried for var-
ious charges concerning his neo-
Nazi activities. After the
Frankfurt trial he will face sev-
eral other trials in other towns in
Germany.
