The SMART MOVE!

Candidate would
change Brazil's
'75 UN vote

Sao Paulo (JTA) — Tancredo
Neves, the projected front-runner
in elections for Brazil's first civi-
lian president in 20 years, prom-
ised a delegation of national
Jewish leaders that his adminis-
traion would change Brazil's vote
in favor the 1975 United Nations
General Assembly "Zionism is ra-
cism resolution," the World
Jewish Congress (WJC) reported
last week.
The leaders of the Confederacao
Israelita do Brasil, the central
representative body of Brazilian
Jewry and the WJC affiliate here,
told Neves of their concern with
the unbalanced position taken by
Brazil with regard to the Middle
East, and the increasingly overt
Arab activism in the country.
Neves took note of the Jewish
community's concern and said he
understood it. He said that his
government would revise Brazil's
vote on the "Zionism equals ra-
cism" resolution.
The Confederacao hosted sepa-
rate luncheons at the Hebraica
Club in Sao Paulo for both Neves,
the opposition candidate, and the
government-backed right-of-
center cadidate, Paulo Maluf.
Although the elections, slated
for Jan. 25, will be indirect, with
the actual presidential selection
entrusted to a 686-member elec-
toral college, the two candidates
have engaged in an electoral
campaign as if each had to win
millions of votes. Even the Jewish
community, which is of signifi-
cance principally in Sao Paulo,
Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre,
became a target for the two candi-
dates.
At this stage in the campaign,
the victory of Neves is considered
almost a foregone conclusion.

Israel asked
to house VOA
transmitter

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel is ex-
pected to agree shortly to a re-
quest from the Reagan Adminis-
tration to build a powerful trans-
mitter here to relay Voice of
America broadcasts to the Soviet
Union.
The Americans have been
pressing for this for some time but
Israel was reluctant to further
aggravate its bitter relations with
the USSR. Recently the U.S. Ad-
ministration reportedly increased
its pressure, after several Euro-
pean countries rejected a similar
request.
Reagan is known to personally
put great stock in the VOA broad-
casts behind the Iron Curtain.
The Americans reportedly pro-
posed that the new relay station
would be used to transmit over-
seas programs aimed at the
Jewish communities within the
Soviet bloc.
Political sources here are said
to believe that in light of Israel's
close relations with the U.S. and
the absence of formal relations
with Moscow, there is no longer
any point in turning down Wash-
ington's request.
