One Gets Hanged, the Other Hung — At a recent convention of Israeli accountants, President Chaim Herzog met Edward Men- delevy, his income tax collector. Quipped Herzog: "As a general rule, taxpayers would like to hang their tax collector, but I'm the only taxpayer in the country who , is hung on the wall of the tax col- lector," a reference to the custom that the President's picture is dis- played in most government offices. New Laurels for Israel Medical Training — The New England Journal of Medicine reports that in 1981 a total of 79 Americans who had studied medicine in Is- rael took the American exams to practice medicine in the United States. Whereas only about two- thirds of Americans who had studied in France and Italy passed the license examinations, all 79 graduates from Israel were ac- cepted. Up in the Air — The longest overhead cable car in the world between two points is now being constructed by the Israel army on Mount Hermon, according to the military weekly, Bamahaneh. Orthodox Music — One of the Knesset members on the Morasha list is Rabbi Avraham Verdiger, who lives in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood. He is a gifted piano player and enjoys music, his favo- rite composer being Shos- takovich. Verdiger explains why he never goes to concerts: If there were separate seating for men and women I would be happy to go." It's the Discipline — A young Israeli soldier, cornered after engaging in a bank robbery, de- fied all attempts by police, family, friends and psychologists to get him to come out. Brandishing his gun, he held them all at bay. His top sergeant was then summoned, and the latter barked out in sten- torian tone: You come out of there at once!" The boy dropped his gun and emerged meekly. The Best Gift — It is customary for many large firms to give New Year gifts to their employees, ranging from household appliances to books or gift certifi- cates. This year a number of com- panies gave their staff certificates valid for a complete cardiological checkup. Criticism of the Electric Com- pany — Knesset member Yuval Neeman, who is an advocate of large families, complained that all recent power failures were during morning and noon hours. He urged that electricity black- outs should be timed for periods when they would be apt to in- crease the national birth rate. Marks and Spencer withdrew its business from Ata over a year ago. (Ironi- cally, Marks and Spencer was es- tablished and is headed by the Marks and Sieff families whose strong Zionist connections date back to the early years of the world Zionist movement. Meanwhile, public approval of the unity government's handling of Israel's economic crisis rose last month, according to an opinion poll published Tuesday. The poll showed that just over half of the adult Jewish population — 50.7 percent — was dissatisfied in No- vember, down fpm 69.2 percent in October. The margin of approval rose in the same period from 22.1 to 44.4 percent. The poll also showed that 59.4 percent of the respondents favored extension of the three- month freeze after it expires in January. A Haifa District Court has or- dered the Cotton Marketing Board to continue selling Ata raw cotton. The Board has refused so far because of an outstanding debt of nearly $2 million. Ata, once a showpiece of private industrial enterprise in Israel, with plants on Haifa Bay and in Galilee, went into bankruptcy fol- lowing the loss of its largest over- seas customer. The receivers ap- pointed were given the task of preserving the business and the jobs of its 8,000 employees. Nor- mally, receivers preside over the liquidation of an enterprise to ensure maximum reimbursement of its creditors. The Ministry of Trade and In- dustry has been looking for a suit- able buyer or investment syndi- cate, so far without success. Ariel Sharon, the Minister of Trade and Industry, has been in New York for the past month pursuing his $50 million libel suit against Time magazine.
