ADL critical
of Wiesenthal
Center memo
New York (JTA) — The Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith (ADL) has issued a
memorandum' rebutting conten-
tions of a recently re-issued pro-
motional six-page fund raising
letter by the Simon Wiesenthal
Center of Los Angeles, accusing
the center of exaggerating claims
of a "new wave of anti-Semitism"
in the United States and Europe.
Saying the center's letter is "re-
plete with factual misstatements
and exaggerations about the situ-
ation with respect to anti-
Semitism and organized Nazi ac-
tivity in the United States an
abroad, "the ADL, in an internal
memorandum to its regional di-
rectors, asserted:
"This letter was inaccurate and
misleading when originally circu-
lated in 1983, but is even more so
today than it was back then, espe-
cially when one considers ADL's
recently issued report on the
KKK and the neo-Nazis." The
memorandum was issued by Jus-
tin Finger, director of the ADL's
civil rights division. A copy of the
memorandum was sent to the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency and
its authenticity was confirmed by
Finger.
Finger stated in the memoran-
dum that it was issued as "back-
ground information" for its
regional directors to aid "in re-
sponding to inquiries" regarding
the letter's contents.
But Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of
the Wiesenthal Center, suggested
in a telephone interview with the
JTA that the memorandum is
part of an attempt by the ADL to
counter the center's inroads onto
the ADL's "historic turf." her
called the attack "unprecen-
dented, undeserved and a dis-
grace."
The center said in a separ'ate
statement issued in Los Angeles
last week that "it never partici-
pates in public debates with other
Jewish organizations over the
seriousness of hate or anti .-
Semitism in our society. We be-
lieve such debate strengthens the
very forces we are all dedicated to
combatting."
Israel soldier
dies in action
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A 19-year-old
Israeli soldier was killed in an ex-
change of fire with terrorists near
Nabatiya in south Lebanon Sun-
day, a military spokesman an-
nounced. He was the 604th fatal-
ity sustained by the Israel defense
Force since the Lebanon war
began in 1982.
The spokesman identified the
dead soldier as Eitan Avrahami
from the Golan Heights village of
Katzrin. He was killed by two
bursts from a Kalachnikov as-
sault rifle after his patrol sur-
prised a group of terrorists in the
act of planting four kilos of high
explosives, with shrapnel along a
road frequented by IDF convoys.
A curfew was imposed on two
nearby villages while troops
searched for the terrorists.
