How you want your food cooked is the first question at Taj Mahal, 12 Mile just east of Green- field in Berkley . . . seating only about 56 . . . with dining favorites from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. We chose medium and dis- covered true deliciousness .. . Appetizer of Pakura (like little chunks of potato pancakes served with a mint sauce) made from `vegetable and nuts, has its own distinct taste . . . You must try the Parota Indian bread served with meals . . . it's entirely different to the taste buds . . . Our Shrimp Curry and Chicken Biryani were excellent . . . followed by an exotic ultra-delicious dessert, Gulab Jaman. We didn't have any, but there are three types of home-made soups, Mulligatawny, Bal (lentel) and Coconut . . . For the less ad-, venturesome (and losers-out) there's Chicken Curry, Chicken Khurma made with coconut milk and cream, filet of sole, seafood supreme, lamb, beef and shrimp . . . all cooked to a person's distinct tastes. Taj Mahal has no affiliation with the one formerly on Cass Ave. across from Wayne . . . This one serves beer and wine, has parking in the rear, and is open seven days a week. AFTER VISIT TO New York nite club, travel mogul Mike Fayne of Hamilton, Miller, Hud- son & Fayne, remarked "This place had a minimum. I don't know what it was, but the girls were wearing it." IT TAKES A TOP crew to run a good ship . . . and that's what Captain Pat Archer seems to have garnered with his Excalibur Res- taurant, Franklin and North- western at 12 Mile . . . Executive Chef Marty Wilk is among the finest . . . Manager Ernie Malazo very cordial, pleasant and effi- cient . . . evening hostess Rosa D'Agostino courteous with pleas- ing ways that make for customer satisfaction. Waitress Laurie Bost waited on us recently . . . with smiling, per- sonable attentiveness . . . Marty's Veal Piccante with lemon butter and artichokes is a standout dish . . . In fact everyone in our party enjoyed themselves . . . Bob and Betty Gerisch, Leah and Mitchell Marks, Tamara and Eugene Friedman and Marilyn and Be- rnie Zack. Pat's youngest son, Michael Archer, wants to get on board .. . and is breaking into the business at Excalibur. CUSHION 'N CUE in Livonia, owned by Shirley and Ray Ab- rams and operated by son Michael, became Michigan's first billiard emporium to serve beer and wine . . . with a state issued license . . . It has a bar and tables now . . . and new sign put up by Marty Weinstock of Radiant Signs reads, "Cushion 'n Cue & Brew, Beer, Wine, Hamburgers" . ..• Shirley and Ray also own the Cushion 'n Cue in Oak Park but no chance for a ticket there . . . it's a dry city. RECENT GRAND OPEN- ING party of Chef Theodore's on former site of Darlin' Lilly's, Or- chard Lake Rd. between 12 and 13 Mile, was a standout . . . Strolling violinists, Ronnie Phillips at the piano, food galore, much frivolity . . . Only thing missing was Chef Theodore Mitropoulos coming out and singing his wonderful opera tunes in booming voice that al- ways entertains the entire place. Restaurant owners from everywhere came to wish Ted much good luck . . . as well as did so many customers who have dis- covered Chef Theodore's as the new place to go now for excellent food . . . This man is quite a chef! WHILE APPEARING re- cently at the Premier Center on Van Dyke, Bill Cosby told us this one . . . about Mr. Goodman being the kind of husband who believed he was entitled to a night off every week . . . What's more, he sold Mrs. Goodman on the proposition . . . So every Wednesday, regular as clockwork, he pedaled off by himself . . . Only one Wednesday, Mr. Goodman neglected to come back home . . . For seven years he was among the missing . . . Then one Wednesday afternoon, he suddenly appeared . . . His wife, overjoyed, began calling her friends . . . "Hey," protested Mr. Goodman, "Whassa big idea?" .. . "I thought I'd whip up a little wel- come home party for you this eve- ning," she explained . . . "What?" roared Mr. Goodman, "on my night out?" DIETER'S DEPT. . . . cottage cheese .. '. Four ounces of this fluffy delight (100 calories, ap- proximately 15 grams of protein!) midmorning and midafternoon can stop you from cheeseburger- ing and malted-milking at lunch . . . Rev up the cheese with sli- vered onion and diced green pep- per . . . Lunch might be half an avocado with lemon . . . 190calories. FORGOT TO MENTION .. . about the Chartroose Caboose on Troost Ave., while in Kansas City . . . and its "Hot Philadelphia Steak Sandwich" . . . If you're in K.C. and see.this place . . . keep on driving by. ANOTHER FAVORITE neighborhood Oriental restau- rant is New Mandarin Gardens, 13 Mile and Orchard Lake Rd. (back of Standard Oil Station in Westbrooke shopping Center). The food we had was very tasty . . . Owner Mike Che uses no MSG (mono sodium glutamate), low salt and 100 percent vegetable oil . . . Also only fresh vegetables .. . fresh ginger, garlic and all other spices. Our soup was Vegetable Bean Curd (also known as tofu or soy- bean soup) . . . high in protein and very healthy . . . The Mandarin Garlic Chicken which takes little chewing — it's so tender — is very lightly breaded . . . mostly chic- ken, not flour . . . cooked in sherry wine, vinegar, black pepper, gar- lic and ginger . . . No sale is used. Mike opened his New Mandarin Gardens in August 1982, seating 135 . . . and has recently received a liquor license . . . for those exotic Hawaiian drinks, cocktails, var- ious beers and wines.
