LISTENING POST

DANNY RASKIN

WHEN THE Michigan Chap-
ter of National Foundation for
Ileitis & Colitis booked Beverly
Hills Cop starring Eddie Murphy,
for their big annual fund raiser at
Northland Theater, it didn't
realize there would be a line casu-
ally spoken in the movie that hit
so close to home . . . While two
B.H. plainclothesmen sat in a
squad car, one of them said to the
other, "Did you know that by the
time a man is 50 he has five
pounds of undigested red meat in
his bowels?" . . . It was intended as
a humorous remark, but the foun-
dation finds this as a serious con-
dition.
NFIC is making enormous pro-
gress in unravelling mysteries of
bowel diseases . . . and the seem-
irfgly jocular phrase was on target
. . . The group celebrated its most
successful fundraiser ever .. .
with almost 800 people attending
Beverly Hills Cop . . . This was the
foundation's seventh annual
event . . . and it just about doubled
attendance from its first year .. .
The theater was jam-packed .. .
won't hold anymore . . . unless
people want to get googly-eyed
sitting in the front row.
Pre-glow was just prior to the
movie . . . in the lobby . . . with
pastries galore, cheese and coffee
. . . The popcorn concession still
did a booming business . . . from so
many who can't watch a movie
without pouncing their hands into
the popped kernels.
Movie was screen debut of loca-
lite Inspector Gilbert Hill (begin-
ning takes place in Detroit) .. .
He's a celebrity now . . . humbly so
. . . but still a very fine policeman
. . . Eli Master, president of
Michigan Chapter NFIC and
member national board of trus-
tees, gave greetings and intro-
duced Inspector Hill who came to
the stage podium to answer Eli's
pretty professional questioning.
Inflammatory bowel disease
afflicts over 2,000,000 Americans
. . . and the highly productive year
by NFIC is very encouraging to
those suffering from Crohn's dis-
ease and ulcerative colitis.
The celebration was also
NFIC's tenth anniversary. Its
strides have been mammoth.
CONGRATS ... to Deanna
and Barry Lawton . . . Steve and
Laurel Epstein .. . and Walt and
Priscilla Bayer . . . on their an-
niversaries . . . Betty Bayer,
mother to Deanna, Laurel and
Walter, had them all together for
a party in their honor at Ex-
calibur.
IN BROWARD COUNTY,
Florida, the "Not Too Young, Not
Too Old Used To Live In Detroit
Club" has its Chanukah party
this Sunday, 12 to 4, at T.Y. Park
on Sheridan St. . . . Plus baseball,
etc. will be discussion of plans for
a mystery trip March 16 . . . Its
next general meeting will be in
February.
Sally and Mort Lewis reversed
things by coming north during the
cold days . . . to help their son at
Lewis Jewelers in Ann Arbor .. .
If any readers want to join the
club, call Mort while he's here in
Southfield, 352-7465.
Note on back of Latke Party
brochure from Hy and Elaine
Emery asks, "Are you soliciting

r advertising dollars do better in ...

up there for new members? We'll
take all snowbirds" . . . Faye and
Henry Leshman, old time friends
of Mort's, recently moved to
Florida and may join the club of
Detroiters.
DREAM EXPERIENCE was
Linda Berman being called on
stage to sing with Barry Manilow
at recent B'nai B'rith Awards
Dinner honoring Bernard Fauber
and David Handleman . . . When
asked if she knew the words to
Barry's great hit, "Can't Smile
Without You," Linda, an avid fan
of his said, "I've been practicing
this for a long time" . . . Hubby Dr.
Marty Berman and friends Enid
and Rick Waller were present to
see her thrill-of-a-lifetime .. .
Now you know what that strange
glow is whenever bumping into
Linda. -
OVER 200 PEOPLE, includ-
ing 50 gals, attended as River-
front Apartments downtown
hosted B'nai B'rith Real Estate
and Construction Unit . . . Follow-
ing complimentary breakfast was
speech by member and developer
Jonathan Holtzman.
COMMITTEE AND GRADS
of this summer's super 50th Reu-
nion of Central and Northern
High Schools at Sheraton-Oaks
Hotel, presented all leftover
monies to . . . Muscular Dys-
. trophy, National Foundation for
Ileitis & Colitis, Jewish Home For
The Aged for Camp Butzel
Seniors, Jewish Association for
Retarded Citizens, United Foun-
dation, American Cancer Society
and American Heart Association
of Michigan.
It was first time two schools'
alumni combined for a joint reu-
nion . . . and Executive Planning
Committee elected to make pre-
sentations to the schools indi-
vidually . . . Each received a
plaque with name plates for in-
scriptions honoring current out-
standing graduating senior for
highest scholastic achievement
and citizenship . . . The chosen
seniors will also receive their own
individual plaque at commence-
ment exercises . . . Also, a check to
be invested into each high school's
scholarship fund was presented
by Izzy Malin, reunion general
chairman.
WE USED TO call it ginger-
bread candy . . . and hadn't been
able to find it anywhere . . . The
plain and chocolate-covered
sponge candy can be gotten at
Master's in La Mirage on North-
western . . . plus fudge, peanut
brittle, hard candies and orange
peels . . . Master's Candy has been
the family since 1890s . . . and
1938 opened in Detroit from Le-
land, Mich. on Lahser and Grand
River . . . The La Mirage store is
run by Ann Masters . . . and boy is
it great to finally find that sponge
candy again!
