Anthology pays tribute
to many Nazi hunters
advocating
Libertarians
punishment for Nazis who have
escaped from justice have often
been either ignored or shamefully
abused. They are, at long last,
given due recognition for courage
and their refusal to be shorn of the
right to expose the arch criminals
in a most revealing and excel-
lently compiled volume which
may well be termed an anthology
of courageous anti-Nazis.
Entitled The Outraged Con-
science: Seekers of Justice for Nazi
War Criminals in America (State
University of New York Press), by
Rochelle G. Saidel, who has been
writing on the subject since 1977.
She has co-authored with Charles
R. Allen, Jr. Nazi War Criminals
in America: Facts . . . Action, and
has produced a series of vid-
eotapes on the subject. Her arti-
cles have appeared worldwide in
newspapers serviced by the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
The author is also special assis-
tant to New York State Senate
Minority Leader Manfred
Ohrenstein. She is an advisor to
both the New York State and New
York City Holocaust centers. A
native of Glens Falls, N.Y., she
lived in Albany for the past 17
years, and this year moved to
Manhattan.
Miss Saidel's co-authorship of
the important volume exposing
the Nazis residing in the U.S.
with Charles Allen at once indi-
cates the importance of her re-
search on the subject, the Allen
articles having been allotted ex-
tensive coverage in the columns of
The Jewish News. Much about
Allen appears in her new book.
Miss Saidel's interest in the
subject was aroused by the Vilis
Hazner case in Albany, N.Y.
Hazner was prosecuted for crimes
committed under Nazism in Lat-
via. This case is among the scores
treated in the Saidel book with
great care for accuracy, and with
serious concern that Nazis should
not be set free here or anywhere
else.
Her collected effort is com-
mended by Beate Klarsfeid and
Simon Wiesenthal, among others,
including heads of national
Jewish organizations.
The great merit of the Saidel
book becomes especially evident
in the chapter dealing with Dr.
Charles Kremer, who led in the
task of exposing the guilt of Vale-
rian Trifa, and therefore also of
the Trifa case. Dr. Kremer had a
tough time in his battle to force
Trifa into being led to justice, with
his eventual deportation from the
U.S. By providing proper recogni-
tion for the labors of a man like
Dr. Kremer, Miss Saidel rendered
an important service in the battle
for justice and in exposing the
Nazi criminals.
Another interesting personal-
ity included in the anthological
survey is David Horowitz. A
United Nations correspondent
since the founding of the world
organization, Horowitz devoted
himself to treating pro-Nazis
mercilessly in the columns of his
United Israel Bulletin, which is
supplementary to the articles he
writes for several newspapers.
While he is no exception, many
Jewish journalists being deeply

Dr. Charles Kremer
devoted to the anti-Nazi efforts,
Horowitz symbolizes such devo-
tions to justice. There are per-
sonal aspects in the Horowitz role.
Having lost a son, who was a vic-
tim of the Nazi crimes, his efforts
assumed a personal urge to lead
the murderers to justice.
Miss Saidel gives due credit to
the activities of former Congress-
woman and now Manhattan Dis-
trict Attorney Elizabeth
Holtzman who continues her
leadership in prosecuting Nazis
and exposing those still residing
in the U.S.
Every one of the courageous
personalities included in the
"The Outraged
Conscience: Seekers
of Justice for Nazi
War Criminals in
A merica" by Rochelle
Saidel, State
University of New
York Press.
Saidel roll of honor deserves spe-
cial mention and consideration for
acclaim in libertarian tasks. In-
chided in her tributes are the
major American Jewish organiza-
tions devoted to the tasks de-_
scribed in her book.
The Outraged Conscience is one
of the most important works
available on the subject of Nazi
hunting and the heroes conduct-
ing such exposes of the Nazi
crimes.

Holiday reading
Fascination with the tradi-
tional values of Jewish festival
observances marks the explana-
tions contained in A First Book of
Jewish Holidays by Sophia N.
Cedarbaum (Union of American
Hebrew Congregations).
It certainly is not the first such
volume about Jewish festivals
and the Sabbath. However, the
charm with which the Cedarbaum
presentation is given in relating
the facts lends them extraordi-
nary importance.
The illustrations by Marlene
Lobell Ruthen add attractiveness
and interest to this paperback.
