Paris (ZINS) — French Chief
Rabbi Rene Sirah told a Maariv
correspondent that France's
700,000 Jews have only 9,000
children enrolled in Jewish day
schools and 5,000 more after-
noon schools. More than 80 per-
cent of the children have no
Jewish education.
The intermarriage rate in
Paris, he said, is 60 percent, and
in the provinces 70 percent.
High sci

Mime awarded
$175,000 for
aborted film
Toronto — A Canailian court
has awarded mime Marcel Mar-
ceau $236,000 (about $175,000
U.S.) because a film company de-
faulted on an agreement to pro-
duce a movie about life in a World
War II Czechoslovakian concen-
tration camp that was to have
starred the artist.
Cinequity Corp. was also • or-
dered to pay $15,000 ($11,250
U.S.) to Alain Mangel, Marceau's
brother and agent.
The film was to have been based
on a story by a Canadian author
about the lives of Jewish children
in the camp. Marceau was par-
ticularly attached to the concept
of the film because his father had
been incarcerated in a Czechos-
lovakian camp during the war. At
the time, Marceau and Mangel
were members of the French Un-
derground.
