THE
JEWISH NEWS?
Semi-Metallic
pads extra
eloquently sympathetic but
realistically accurate portrayal of
the often unstable lives, the nerv-
ous breakdowns, the marital
breakups and the occasional poe-
tic breakthroughs of a once bril-
liant coterie of American poets in-
cluding John Berryman (to whom
Simpson was married), R. P.
Blackmur, Randall Jarrell,
Robert Lowell and Delmore
Schwartz.
Indeed, the ghosts of Lowell
and, particularly, Schwartz,
haunt these pages. Both are men-
tioned by name and lines from
their poems are quoted; and one of
the short stories The Hunter" in-
sistently recalls Schwartz' great
short story, "In Dreanis Begin Re-
sponsibilities."
Schwartz is the great failed poet
of the generation just ahead of
Doctorow's generation. Doc-
torow's Jonathan is afraid that he,
too, will fail. In his midlife crisis,
he threatens to bring about the
end of his marriage of 18 years by
taking a studio in Manhattan,
leaving his wife Angel and their
children behind in Connecticut.
He aims to find himself once and
for all.
It's the same old story: he wants
to trade in the old model for a
newer one, though the muse he
has in mind is elusive if inspiring.
But in this instance there is a re-
freshing twist to the melancholic
. theme of domestic abandonment.
Moved by his conscience to pro-
vide shelter for a destitute family
of Salvadoran refugees who over-
run his studio, he makes inevita-
ble his own return to home and
hearth. Once a Jewish mother
hen, always a Jewish mother hen.
In caring there is redemption.
Those familiar with Doctorow's
earlier novels know that his do-
minant view of life is one of de-
spair over the decline of civiliza-
tion and the prevalence of injus-
tice in society. "Welcome to hard
times," he said once, using that
somber greeting as the title for his
first book, and he's been saying it
ever since. His unhappy job has
been to record the hard times. But
as bad as things are, Doctorow
clings to Jonathan's belief in re-
demption. This is his means of
paying homage to an ancient
literary convention. It is that the
calling of the poet merges into
that of the prophet seeking social
justice.
Increasingly, Doctorow sounds
like a modern day Old Testament
prophet crying out in the wilder-
ness. He's well worth listening to,
not only for the appropriateness of
his message but for the impres-
sively poetic way he delivers it.
