The library has been vacant for
over a year.
"It's very exciting for us,"
Newman said. "We will be able to
do so much more than before."
Activities planned for the
facility, which will need extensive
renovation and remodeling, will
include services for the commu-
nity at large, Newman said.
"It will be serving the Jewish
community — some Hadassah
members and some not — in that
it is near the Jewish Community
Center. Hadassah in Detroit has
6,000 members, 1,500 of which
live in that area.
"We plan on doing a great deal,
particularly in the expansion of
our education program. There is
tremendous potential for what we
can do there."
Despite a hint of minor town-
ship opposition at the outset,
Newman is confident that the
permit will be granted. "The deal
went through the (library) board
in a very gracious, very dignified
manner," she said.

.

HHI met with early township
opposition when West Bloomfield
decided they wanted to use the
building for a police station to
help relieve the overcrowding of
the township hall, which was
built in 1927.
HHI has 120 days to get final
township agreement that the sale
be "as is," that the library return
HHI's deposit if the title cannot be
cleared, and that the library will
continue to maintain the building
in its present condition.
