Soviets real
Lebanon victor

Jerusalem (ZINS) — The Soviet
Union ended up as the real winner
in the Lebanon war, one Middle'
East expert feels.
"The Soviets would not go to
war for Syria, but they compen-
sated the Syrians with a vast
number of weapons and an in-
creased number of advisers in
Syria," according to Itamar
Rabinovich, professor of Middle
Eastern studies at Tel Aviv Uni-
versity. Prof. Rabinovich, who
advanced his views at a
university-sponsored symposium
last month on the future of Israeli
policy in Lebanon, said that the
war in Lebanon helped the Rus-
sians get a better toe-hold in the
Middle East.

Jabotinsky
prize awarded

New York — The $100,000
Jabotinsky prize was awarded
jointly last week to Ambassador
Yehudah Z. Blum, Israel's repre-
sentative to the United Nations
from 1978-1984, Nazi hunter
Beate Klarsfeld, and Soviet
Jewish Prisoner of Conscience
Anatoly B. Shcharansky.
The Jabotinsky Prize is
awarded annually by the
Jabotinsky Foundation, a non-
profit educational body, for excep-
tional service in defense of the
rights of the Jewish people.

Stockholm — The Swedish gov-
ernment has enacted a measure
allowing members of that coun-
try's Jewish community to apply
for a rebate on duties paid for the
importation of kosher meat, the
World Jewish Congress reported
last month.
Observant Jews in Sweden are
forced to import all meat products
because of the country's ban on
ritual slaughter.

all salaried workers in Isr a . el fail
to earn the minimum income re-
quired to pay taxes, the Hebrew
daily Davar reported. The news-
paper said that some 470,000 Is-
raelis currently make up the "zero
percent" tax bracket.
