Egypt. All admired his wisdom
and ingenuity. It was so easy, so
tempting to become vain and
arrogant, and to be impressed by
one's own strength and power.
The self-made man is a common
attitude in modern life. Kochi
v'otzem yodi — "my strength and
effort did all this for me." Joseph
in -true humility answers: "It is
not in me. God will give an answer
for the peace of Pharoah."
Once again Joseph has suc-
ceeded. He has not permitted the
glitter of the moment to corrupt
and demoralize his life.
Are not these the typical crisis
man faces in life? All of us, at one
time or another, fight despair,
battle our conscience, or seek to
retain humility in the face of suc-
cess. If throughout these various
challenges in life we will re-
member that man is not alone,
that man must give reckoning for
all the deeds, and that in spite of
all our achievements our lives are
frail and in the hands of God, then
we, too, like Joseph will be
matzliach -- the Jewish measure
of success.
