Vayehi Hashem im Yoseph,
vayehi ish matzliach — and the
Lord was with Joseph and he was
a prosperous man (Genesis 39:1-
2).
The word matzliach is used
three times in this chapter, each
time with reference to Joseph.
This is somewhat unusual for the
word matzliach is rarely found in
the Torah and certainly never
applied with such frequency to a
single biblical figure. One would
also have to question whether
Joseph's circumstances can be
considered as prosperous. In our
age, success as usually associated
with material achievements, with
power, glamor and popularity.
What we may find here is an in-
spiring lesson on the true mean-
ing of success.

best under the circumstances and
face the future with hope . . . and
faith.
Joseph was indeed fortunate,
for in his hour of misfortune and
trouble, he was imbued with faith
in God. He never lost hope. He
believed the "Lord was with
Joseph" and he applied himself to
his work. He did his best under
trying and difficult circum-
stances, he, therefore, became an
ish matzliach is prosperous man.
The second crisis provided
Joseph with a severe moral test.
He had to face the powerful al-
lurements of the mistress of the
