Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel agreed this week to a Lebanese request for a two-week break in the talks at Nakura and denied that it had set a deadline for progress. The denial followed media re- ports that Israeli officials in- formed U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Murphy that un- less the negotiations yielded some progress in the next 10 days, Is- rael would act unilaterally to re- deploy its forces in south Leba- non. The Lebanese had asked that the talks be adjourned for Christmas. Israeli sources said they plan to use the break to assess the negotiations to date and consider future steps. Israel Radio reported that the hiatus in negotiations might be used by Is- rael to encourage a mediation ef- fort by France or to persuade the U.S. to become more deeply in- volved. Murphy, who is Assistant Sec- retary for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs and the Re- agan Administration's top aide in the region, was in Beirut on Mon- day after conferring with Israeli leaders over the weekend. He also went to Damascus and then re- turned to Jerusalem. Some Israeli sources said that Murphy would undertake "shuttle" diplomacy between the three capitals in an uhe 20% discount on all merchandise, always.
