Mel Ravitz
responds to ad

I have now read the incredible
statement some friends of my
father had printed in the Jewish
News (Nov. 30), presumably in de-
fense of my father's Jewish iden:
tification and against what they
considered a slight by his oldest
son.
As that oldest son, I want them
to know that my father's Jewish
identification and involvement
needed no defense by anyone, both
because no slight was either in-
tended or expressed and because
my father's life-long, exemplary
religious community participa-
tion was sufficient evidence in it-
self.
Secondly, whoever among these
friends of my father read my
comment (Nov. 23) and was of-
fended by it clearly misun-
derstood and misinterpreted it. I
stand by that comment: "My
father continued his religious life
partly for social reasons." I don't
know how they construed 'social
reasons', or miscontrued it (I did
not capitalize the two words; they
did), but that comment means
only that my father centered a
large measure of his social rela-
tionships around the synagogue
and its auxiliaries and around the
friends he made in those activi-
ties. The real irony is that the
very friendships I had in mind as
the social reasons that partly sup-
ported his continued religious
participation were with those who
signed their outrageous state-
ment. . .
Further, let me observe that in
their zeal to rebuke me, no one
bothered to ask what I meant by
the comment I made. I was as near
as the telephone and could have
explained to anycne who called.. .

Rabbi decries
letter's use

In the Nov. 30 issue of The
Jewish News, an ad was placed by
Mr. Eugene Feldman in which he
decried some difficulty he was
havng with the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis concerning the
salting and soaking of meat in his
butcher shop. Apparently, Mr.
Feldman thought it to be judicious
to include in his ad an article that
I had written some years ago con-
cerning the Kashering of meat.. .
My article in and of itself is true
and valid in every respect, but it
was written for general informa-
tion and was never intended to be
any part of a controversy. By plac-
ing my article in his ad, Mr.
Feldman makes it appear that I
am somehow defending him in his
argument with the Vaad
-;Harabonim. That is unfair and
unjust. I have nothing to do with
the Vaad Harabonim, and I have
nothing to do with Mr.
Feldman. . .
