Complete with heroes, villains, and a miracle, the Chanukah story is scheduled to become the first animated Is- raeli film to appear on American television (3 p.m. Dec. 17, Chan- nel 50). Gesher Productions of Jerusalem, creators of the 28- minute feature called Lights , re- ceived some help from American professionals. The Hubley Studios of New York designed some sets. Leonard Nimoy and Judd Hirsch provided their voices for the car- toon. Israelis have learned to be wary of their elected leaders. A new law requires every Knesset member to reveal in writing his financial situation, along with income, as- sets, and debts of all members of his family. Suspicious declara- tions will be reported to the attorney-general, but the infor- mation can be made public only by the order of a court. The "real McCoy" of hambur- gers is about to affix 15 golden arches in Israel's growing junk food landscape. Due to arrive next summer, the McDonald restau- rants will offer competition to MacDavid's, their local equiv- alent, whom they had unsuc- cessfully sued for stealing part of the McDonald name. The Hebrew University and the -National Council of Jewish Women started the program in 1969 whereby 4-6 year-olds are taught basic skills at home to facilitate their future school experience. The program is helping 14,000 families through- out Israel. More proof that Israeli educa- tion is in touch with the times is the latest ruling that a teacher's certificate will only be granted to those who pass a basic computer exam. An Israeli architect made the top 11 list of the American Insti- tute of Architecture. The 86- year-old Arieh Elhanani designed Yad Vashem in Jerusalem and Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv and won the Israel Prize for Architecture. in 1973. Five curtain calls at the London Royal Festival Hall follow Maya Weltman's playing of Men- delssohn's First Piano Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The talented 12-year- old Israeli was invited to London by conductor Klaus Tennstedt, who overheard her playing while he was walking in the halls of the Rubin Academy of Music in Is- rael. The Conservative movement recently opened its first rabbini- cal seminary in Israel. Its direc- tor, Rabbi Reuven. Hammer feels that by establishing this rabbini- cal school the movement will gain more recognition in Israel, than by trying to win approval from Orthodox rabbis. Now that a bronze sculpture of Golda Meir graces a New York City square, Americans will have a constant reminder of the suc- cessful Israeli leader of American origin. Recently arrived in New York is a new Israeli politician who was educated in the United States. Is- rael's new man at the United Na- tions is 35-year-old Binyamin Netanyahu. He has proven his diplomatic talents in Washing- ton, and has become an expert on the subject of terrorism, folloWing the killing of his hero brother — Yonatan — during the Entebbe rescue mission. The diplomat, known for his style and polish, will also live in style. The Netanyahus, who have no children, stayed at the Regency Hotel, reports the Jerusalem Post, while awaiting redecoration of the million-dollar Fifth Avenue ambassador's residence where a hired husband-and-wife team will care for their needs.
