criticized
New York — Five national
organizdtions, including JeWish,
Episcopal, Lutheran and Unita-
rian groups, last week jointly
urged Secretary of the Interior
William P. Clark to rescind the
'recent decision by the National
Park Service to erect a
government-sponsored Creche on
public park land, the Ellipse, in
Washington.
"It is our firm belief that reli-
gious symbols of all faiths belong
on religious and other private
property, not on public property
and not sponsored by the govern-
ment," the organizations said in a
letter sent to Clark last week.
The five groups who signed the
letter are: the American Jewish
Committee; Americans for Reli-
gious Liberty; the Washington
Office of the Episcopal Church;
Office of Governmental Affairs,
Lutheran Council, U.S.A.; and
the Washington Office of the Un-
itarian Universalist Association.

AMERICA'S PLUMPEST PITTED PRUNES
Chief Rabbi
visits Canada
Montreal (JTA) — The Sephar-
dic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Mor-
dekhai Eliyahou, is visiting
Canada for two weeks, the first
visit of its kind for any Chief
Rabbi to Canada.
Eliyahou's itinerary includes
official visits with Ontario Pre-
mier William Davis and Lieuten-
ant Governor John Aird, with
Quebec Premier Rene Levesque,
and with Montreal Mayor Jean
Drapeau.
Eliyahou will Spend most of the
two weeks in Montreal making a
three-day trip to Toronto and brief
stops in. Quebec City and Ottawa.
Montreal is the home of nearly
25,000 Sephardim, mostly of
Moroccan origin, who have been
planning this tour for months.
One of the Chief Rabbi's func-
tions will be to officially inaugu-
rate the new headquarters of the
Sephardic Rabbinate of Quebec.

New York — Traces of Argenti-
na's anti-Semitic military dic-
tatorship, deposed from power in
1983, continue to haunt the Latin
American country, according to
the Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith (ADL).
Rabbi Morton M. Rosenthal, di-
rector of ADL's Latin American
Affairs Department, reported
that a package of human bones
was recently delivered through
the mail to the parents of Patricia
Uchasky Rubinstein, a young
Jewish woman who disappeared
in 1977, with an enclosed note
claiming that the bones were her
remains. A neo-fascist group
known as "Condor 33" claimed re-
sponsibility for sending the par-
cel.
Laboratory tests subsequently
revealed that the bones were male
and could not have been Rubins-
tein's skeleton.
