Detroit teenager
twins bat mitzvah
with Russian kin

Ericka Amy Hootner celebrated
her bat mitzvah on Nov. 30 at
Temple Emanu-El followed by a
kiddush. Ericka, who resides in
Oak Park, is the daughter of Ann
and Sheldon Hootner.
She is an eighth-grade honor
student at Norup Middle School.
Her interests are reading, music,
dancing, drama and modeling.
She has attended Hebrew and
Sunday school at Temple
Emanu-El, where she studied
with Cantor Norman Rose in
preparation for her bat mitzvah.
Ericka symbolically shared her
bat mitzvah with her cousin,
Shana Belinson, of the Soviet
Union. Shana is the daughter of
Ena and Genia Belinson of Belc.
Shana's family has not been able
to leave Russia because of an ail-
ing grandfather. The family hopes
to immigrate to Israel in the near
future.
She has corresponded with her
cousin and they have exchanged
photographs. Ericka has met for
the first time her great-aunt and
great-uncle, who are visiting the
United States for the first time
from Israel and who shared in the
bat mitzvah celebration.
Ericka was joined by family and
friends from Kansas, Chicago and
Flint. Ericka's family and friends
gathered last Sunday at La Ver-
anda restaurant for a luncheon
and dancing.
