Cartoon characters Miriam and Yoni offer water to a thirsty shepherd
and his flock in a scene from the animated Chanukah special "Lights."

Lights, an animated half-houf
holiday special about Chanukah
will be aired at 3 p.m. Dec. 17 on
Channel 50 (WKBD).
, Produced by Gesher/Jerusalem
Productions, Lights is a fantasy-
adventure which retells in alle-
gory form the story of Chanukah.
It took two years to produce,
and involved 80 people working in
seven animation teams. Narrated
by actor Judd Hirsch, the film is
designed by Faith Hubley (whose
New York studio has won four
Academy Awards). Bill Littlejohn
of MGM supervised the initial
layouts. Stars Leonard Nimoy
and Paul Michael Glazer portray
two of the animation's chief char-
acters.
The animation was carried out
in Israel at Ein Gedi's Animation
Studio, with the help of extra

teams from Jerusalem and Tel
Aviv.
Without once using the word
"Jewish" or "religious," it delivers
a universal message: that
everyone has the right to be
different.
