Respite care plan offered by JFS

A new program of in-home re-
spite care services for the aging
was announced by Marvin C.
Daitch, president of Jewish Fam-
ily Service. The program will be
financed by a special grant from
the Area Agency on Aging 1-B. A
request for supplemental funds is
being considered by the Max M.
Fisher Jewish Community Foun-
dation.
Samuel Lerner, executive di-
rector of Jewish Family Service,
noted that in-home respite care
will be provided for the caregivers
of frail or otherwise in-
capacitated, older persons who
are generally ill and homebound.
The in-home respite service will
provide some relief for the rela-
tive or friend who is taking care of
the frail or otherwise in-
capacitated, older person on a
24-hour, seven-days-a-week
basis.
Lerner said that the maximum
time allowed by the Area Agency
on Aging 1-B for respite care for
the caregiver is 168 hours per
year per case. Jewish Family
Service will also be available to
provide other services to the fam-
ily, including counseling to the
caregiving relative, homemaker
services, meals-on-wheels serv-
ices where appropriate.
The JFS also will function as
the head of a consortium of agen-
cies in the Jewish community that

will be utilized to provide a
variety of services both to the ill
patients and to the caregivers.
This will include the Jewish
Vocational Service, Fresh Air
Society, the Jewish Home for the
Aged and the Jewish Community
Center.
Members of the community in
need of respite can apply to the
agency for possible inclusion in
this program by calling Ellie
Gersten at JFS, 559-1500.
One caseworker/coordinator
and several respite care workers
will be engaged on a part-time
basis to fill the needs. The pro-
gram is limited to respite care for
the caregivers of the homebound
aged. If the program expands, it
will also be available for caregiv-
ers of the terminally ill of all ages.
The program is not limited to
those who are living on marginal
incomes whether from Social Se-
curity, S.S.I. or on small pensions.
Under the guidelines of the AAA
1-B and Older Americans' Act,
this program is intended to serve
individuals at all income levels.
The proposal for in-home re-
spite care was endorsed by the
Jewish Welfare Federation Task
Force on Community Based Serv-
ices to the Non-Institutionalized
Elderly, chaired by Dr. Conrad
Giles, and by the Long-Range
Planning Committee of the
Jewish Family Service.
