Jerusalem (JTA) — The Asso-
ciation of Social Workers has
warned Prisons Commissioner
Moshe Wertheimer and Police
Minister Haim Barley that they
had better ready cells for 900
more prisoners in the coming year
if proposed cuts in social services
are implemented.
According to the social workers,
the cuts would force judges to send
more offenders to jail rather than
put them on probation.

Israelis protest
rabbi's sit-in

Jerusalem (JTA) — Twenty-
one Israeli demonstrators were
jailed over the weekend after they
sought unsuccessfully to get the
police to remove West Bank
militant Rabbi Moshe Levinger
from his month-long vigil outside
the Dahaishe refugee camp.
Levinger has been demanding
tougher action by the authorities
against Palestinian stone-
throwers.
The demonstrators, members of
the Committee of Solidarity with
Bir Zeit University, ran afoul of
police when they refused orders to
leave the campsite. Levinger was
allowed to remain.
The refugee camp near
Bethlehem was again brought
under curfew Friday morning, fol-
lowing a number of Molotov
cocktail attacks on Israeli cars on
the Bethlehem-Hebron road
Thursday night. No one was hurt
and no damage was caused. A
Molotov cocktail was also thrown
Thursday night at an Israeli out-
side the Kalandiya refugee camp,
north of Jerusalem. Here too,
there were no injuries and no
damages.

DAYS
FROM 4 P.M.

25290 GREENFIELD North of 10 Mile Rd.

Wiesenthal Center has asked fed-
eral and local authorities for a full
investigation of the incident.
The Croatians were apparently
infuriated by Judge Brown's deci-
sion. In denying bail he agreed
with Assistant U.S. Attorney
General David Nimer's argument
that bail is not the rule in extradi-
tion cases unless "exceptional cir-
cumstances" can be established.
Defense attorney Gary Fleis-
chman failed to establish that Ar-
tukovic, 84, is too ill to remain in
custody and is not competent to
understand the case pending
against him. Artukovic has been
confined to the prison ward at
Orange County-University of
California Medical Center but
was in the courtroom for the bail
hearing.
