Friday, December 7, 1984 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEWS Austrians deny inviting Capucci Austria (JTA) — In response to reports that the PLO sympathizer Archbishop Hilarion Capucci will attend this week's observances of "Palestine Week" at the United Nations here, the Austrian gov- ernment has officially informed the World Jewish Congress that it neither invited Capucci nor will it participate in any of his meetings, Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, WJC vice president, reported. In accord with established prac- tice of recent years, UN officials here have organized a series of commemorative events in obser- vance of "Palestine Day" on Nov. 29 — the date of the UN partition resolution on Palestine. Capucci, who had been jailed in Israel for his participation in smuggling arms for the PLO, was invited to participate. In response to this develop- ment, Hertzberg, last week in Vienna repesenting the WJC dur- ing the Jewish cultural festival in the city, raised the matter and ex- pressed grave concern with senior Austrian officials "at the very highest level of government." Leon Zelman, director of Vien- na's Jewish Welcome Service, an associated institution of the WJC, received formal notification from the Interior and Foreign Affairs Ministries that the Austrian gov- ernment had nothing to do with the invitation to Capucci and would not participate at any meeting with him. They stressed that the invita- tion to Capucci was solely ex- tended by UN officials and under terms of agreement with the world body — similar to condi- tions which apply to UN activities in new York and Geneva — they are precluded from interferring in this case. • I ROAST CHICKEN I • BABY BEEF LIVER I • ROAST TONGUE • HOMEMADE MEAT LOAF I I 49 FOR I • '/2 OFF SENIOR CITIZENS ANYTHING ON OUR MENU ANY HOUR!
