scribes her as "a fiercely intellec-
tual woman essayist who wrote
for Commentary and who "culti-
vated a disdainful attitude toward
absolutely everything."
Such meshugass apart, the
truly satisfying elements in
Parachutes and Kisses are Isad-
ora's poignant and sensitive ex-
pressions of love for her 97-year-
old grandfather who dies and for
her 3-year-old daughter. These
are her links to the past and the
future and to her sanity as well.
If the present is marked by de-
speration, despair and degener-
acy, then the closeness of these
T., loved ones give such meaning and
stability to Isadora's life as she is
capable of achieving, and they
compensate for her incapacity in
sharing a lasting love with some-
one of her own generation. This
vigorous love of family and the
continuity it provides is ulti-
• mately the meat that sustains her
life.
It's too bad there's not more of it
on her plate and less crazy salad.

UAHC to fund
refugee village
in Ethiopia

Miami Beach (JTA) — The
leaders of American Reform
Judaism have launched a nation-
wide appeal to provide emergency
shelter and medical care for vic-
tims of starvation in Ethiopia.
While no campaign goal has
been set, Rabbi Alexander Schin-
- dler, president of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
(UAHC), told the UAHC's Board
of trustees that the UAHC hoped
to raise an initial sum of
$250,000, which he said was
enough to construct and supply a
village of 600 tents sheltering
• 6,000 refugees.

NEWS

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Knes-
set House Committee decided this
week to reduce the overnight
hotel allowance for Knesset
members who live outside
Jerusalem but must spend the
night there to attend morning
sessions. The reduction is from
$50 to $35 per night which means
the MKs must stay at a three star
rather than a five star hotel —
unless they want to dig into their
own pockets to pay the difference.
