Investment in Israel probed

Jerusalem (JTA) — Proposals
to promote the large scale invest-
ment of world Jewish capital in
Israel in the coming years were
discussed at a meeting of govern-
ment leaders with Israeli bankers
and industrialists here Tuesday.
The businessmen were briefed
by Premier Simon Peres, Finance
Minister Yitzhak Modai, Eco-
nomic Minister Gad Yaacobi and
Ministers - without - Portfolio
Ezer Weizman and Moshe Arens.

take place in New York between

New York (JTA) — The Board
of Jewish Education of Greater
New York has announced that it
plans to choose, for the first time,
ten educators from area Jewish
schools for recognition as "Distin-
guished Teachers." Each teacher
will receive an award of $1,000
and a commemorative certificate.

The idea behind these plans is
that, above and beyond the tradi-
tional fund-raising through the
United Jewish Appeal and the Is-
rael Bonds Organization, capital
investments would be funneled

IDF evaluates budget

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Israel
Defense Force will retrench be-
cause of an $80 million cut in the
defense budget, Chief of Staff
Gen. Moshe Levy told the Knesset
Foreign Affairs and Security
Committee. He said about 2,000
permanent employes of the IDF
will be dismissed, training and re-
serve duty time will be reduced
and aircraft and tanks will be op-
erated fewer hours.
