consideration of critical na-
tional problems.
But I have also rejoiced
when respect, acclaim and
success came to him, as when
the Nielsen ratings showed
that 20 million Americans
were watching his Heritage
television programs every
Monday night, and (most of
them being non-Jews) were
learning from Eban much
about the history and world-
contributions of the Jewish
people to the progress of civili-
zation, even though I did agree
with many critics that Eban,
brilliant orator though he is,
seemed wooden, nervous and
ill at ease before the television
cameras most of the time, ex-
cept when he was passionately
talking about such emotional
matters as the Holocaust.
I have also rejoiced that
lately he has been winning
praise in strange places, as, for
example, when a Likud col-
umnist, writing in an Israeli
paper about Eban's defeat for
Speaker, said that under Eban
the Knesset would have at-
tained worldwide prestige
which it had never had.
Or, as when Carl Alpert,
syndicated Israeli columnist,
who generally writes from a
pro-Likud, pro-Revisionist
point of view, concluded a
long, eulogistic article with
his opinion that Eban is "un-
doubtedly a great man."
In this country I have not
been surprised, knowing
Eban's high standing among
American Jews, that his
treatment by leaders of his
own party inspired Jewish

editors from Denver to Detroit
to Baltimore to criticize how
Israel has been wasting the ta-
lents of this world-famous fig-
ure.
Lately the suggestion has
been made . that Eban, Israel's
most distinguished elder ;
statesman, be given the
largely honorary post of
President of Israel. But then it ;

As the temporary
speaker of the
Knesset, Eban
L.
brought dignity to the
often-rowdy
parliamentary
=,
sessions.

is pointed out that his
brother-in-law, Chaim Her
zog, the incumbent, is entitled
to two five-year terms, and by
the end of that time Eban will j
be 77. So what?! If Ronald RE":•
agan can still function as
President of a vast country
like the United States, with all
its problems, at age 77 (which,
is what he will be before
second term expires), surely
Eban at 77 could function in
the prestigious yet not very
vital role of Israeli President.
Although this might solve
the problem of Israeli
clans (the What-To-Do-
With-Eban Problem) I know
that this is not the way Eban
planned the climax of his
career.

Jerusalem (ZINS) — In 1980,
Israel exported goods to Egypt
worth $2.7 million. In the follow-
ing year, the figure had risen to
$15.7 million and in 1982 it
climbed to $25.4 million. How-
ever, in 1983 it fell to $9.7 million.
Israel purchased two million
tons of crude oil yearly from
Egypt. In 1982 those purchases
amounted to $450 million. In the

previous year, when world priceQJ
for oil had declined, Israel still
paid between $350-$400 millio
for its oil imports from Egypt.

These sums do not reflect the
additional income earned by
Egypt from the tens of thousands
of Israeli tourists who visit Egyp .
The number of Egyptian tourists
to Israel is insignificant.
