Forum told fight
for Soviet Jewry

More people filled one room at
Cong. B'nai David for Sunday's
Interfaith Plea for Soviet Jewry
than the total number of Jews
allowed to emigrate from the
Soviet Union during the past six
months — and the room wasn't all
that large.
The crowd of about 400 heard
0 former refusenik Yuri Shtern and
Sister Ann Gillen, national direc-
tor of the Interreligious Task
Force on Soviet Jewry, describe
what has become an almost im-
possibly bleak situation for Rus-
sian Jews and steps the Detroit
Jewish community can take to at-
tack the problem. The program,
one of about 60 Human Rights
Week gatherings held throughout
the country Sunday, was or-
ganized by the Greater Detroit
Section, National Council of
Jewish Women and was co-
sponsored by a coalition of two
dozen religious and civic organ-
izations.
"The chances for emigration are
now practically non-existent,"
Shtern said, citing October fig-
ures which revealed that only 29
Jews were permitted to leave the
Soviet Union out of the more than
100,000 who have applied for
emigration. The former refusenik
also- challenged the Soviet claim
that all Jews who wanted to leave
have done so, pointing out that
some 400,000 persons have re-
quested invitations from relatives
in Israel, one of the requirements
for a visa.
Shtern, who was allowed to
L leave the Soviet Union in 1981
? and settled with his family in Is-
rael where he became co-founder
of the Center for Information on
Soviet Jewry, reminded the audi-
ence of the "catch-22" situation
faced by the two million Jews cur-
rently living in Russia: denial of
any religious life and a govern-
ment that, for all intents and pur-
poses, refuses to let citizens seek a
meaningful Jewish existence
elsewhere.
The former refusenik talked
about the recent arrests of He-
brew teachers on trumped-up
charges and praised the efforts of
those who were fighting to give
themselves and others some shred
of Jewish life in the USSR. "It is
people like these (the Hebrew
teachers), who have the courage
to do what they are doing, to teach
in secret and at great danger to
themselves, that should spur us
on in our efforts to help the re-
fuseniks."
Sister Ann, meanwhile, com-
pared the plight of Soviet Jews
with other oppressed peoples,
such as the "disappeared ones" in
Argentina and the famine victims
in Ethiopia. It makes no dif-
ference, she said, whether these
violations of human rights are
brought on by direct government
action, or by a combination of so-
cial and other conditions.
"Ours will go down as an age of
trivia, an age of torture or an age
of hope. The decisions made at
meetings like these will help to
determine the direction of that fu-
ture," according to Sister Ann,
who has been involved in the fight
