Today, the cultural outlook
for the region remains bleak.
In 1978 a new permanent Yid-
dish theater group was formed
and headed by Yuri Sherling.
Whatever Sherling's own
interests or aspirations for the
theater, he will be kept on a
tight leash: The troupe's per-
formances will be few and will
contain little of interest to
Soviet Jews.
Besides, the theater group
will perform in Yiddish, a lan-

quisition of new farm machin-

tural achievements.
Why does the Soviet Regime
persist in promoting the
Jewish Autonomous Region?
Birobidzhan's extended life
may be explained by mixture
of domestic and foreign policy
considerations.
The Soviets have always
seen Birobidzhan as a Potem-
kin village — a useful public
relations ploy to demonstrate
that Soviet Jews are indeed a
privileged community.
Here we have the accusatory

as well as the recollection of the

a Soviet Jewish colonization proj-

teresting situations in which the
late Detroiter David A. Brown
and his associates in the Joint
Distribution Committee were in-
volved.
The long quotation from the
Kagedan article exposing the Sta-
lin bogus is actually the exposure
of the entire Birobidzhan question
and merits the space allotted it.
Kagedan has enriched the files of
the American Jewish Committee
with his researched data on a sub-
ect that demands attention and
knowledge before a series of ex-
hibitions like Chicago's lends cre-
dence to a Soviet ploy.
Treatment of the Birobidzhan
question and its implications calls
for recognition as a valuable
addendum to the discussion of a
book recently published by the
Jewish Publication Society of
America. In The Birobidzhan Af-
fair: A Yiddish Writer in Siberia,
bylined Israel Emiot, thF ,.
pseudonym of Israel
Yaknovsky-Goldwasser, a popu-
lar Jewish Forward columnist,
(translated by Max Rosenfeld, in-
troduction by Michael Stanis-
lawsky), the terrifying conditions
under which the author lived in
Birobidzhan present factuality to
the mirage acclaimed by the
USSR as the Jewish Autonomous:
Region.
Propaganda on a national scale
can be very misleading, and much
of the polluting often creeps into
public exhibitions, via the media -
and exhibitions. Therefore, the
exposing of the Birobidzhan is
valuable for the public record and
in the interest of historical truths.

Arabs demonstrate
on anniversary of
partition plan

Jerusalem (JTA) — Unrest rip-
pled through East Jerusalem and
West Bank last week as Palesti-
nian Arabs marked the 37th an-
niversary of the United Nations
partition decision, a day of na-
tional protest, with demonstra-
tions and scattered violence.
But military sources said the
disturbances were fewer and less
serious than on the same occasion
in previous years. There was no
commercial strike as there had
been in the past. Shops remained
open.
In Bethlehem, several dozen
Arab youths attempted to attack
the local police station but were
driven off. Police fired into the
and detained a number of sus-
pects.
Rock-throwing incidents and
tire burnings were reported in
Ramallah, in Khader village,
south of Bethlehem, Nablus and
the Shuafat neighborhood in East
Jerusalem. Schools in thosc'
localities were closed for the day.
Nov. 29, 1947, is the date of the
UN General Assembly resolution
to partition Palestine into Jewish
and Arab states. For that reason,
November is generally a month of
unrest on the West Bank and East
Jerusalem.
