Chanukah Gelt
A Traditional. Gift
Un-Silent Night
Continued from Page 15
in December, whole lesson
plans revolved around
Christmas. By first grade, she
had a very sensitive teacher
who divided her bulletin board
down the middle and put up
Chanukah symbols and
Christmas symbols side by
side. I was just as upset about
that."
Fred Goldenberg, chairman
of the Community Relations
Committee for the Jewish
Community Council, shares
Linda's uneasiness over • the
celebration of any December
holiday within the public
schools. He explains, "We
must be very careful. We need
to protect the separatiOn of
church and state which our
Constitution guarantees.
Children should not be ex-
pected to participate in activi-
ties celebrating various holi-
days, whether the holiday is
Christmas or Chanukah.
These celebrations belong in
the home, church or
synagogue."
In response to this issue, the
Jewish Community Council
put together a very specific,
question-answer pamphlet
entitled December Dilemma.
The pamphlet explains
what is and is not appropriate
in the public schools in order
for them to remain religiously
neutral. The pamphlet has
been widely circulated in the
two seasons since its incep-
tion.
Goldenberg hopes it will
help make educators and par-
ents aware and sensitive to the
church-state issue. He ex-
plains, "Children should not
have to make Christmas trees
one week and Chanukah
menorahs the next. They
should not be expected to sing
Christmas carols. We hope
educators and parents will
change their thinking and
stop certain practices cur-
rently accepted and prevalent
in the schools. It's too difficult
for a 5- or 10-year-old to take a
stand on these issues."
December Dilemma u r ges
parents to show their concern
and speak out against prac-
tices within their children's
classes that blur church-state
separation. However, Alan
Gale, Jewish Community
Council assistant director, ex-
plains, It is a practice in the
field not to raise Christmas is-
sues publicly during Christ-
mas. If you have concerns that
can't be solved quietly or pri-
vately, wait until after Jan. 2"
to establish an effective policy
for the following year.
