Cohn was re- elected chairman of the Jewish Welfare Federation's Executive Committee at its recent meeting. A former president of Federa- tion, Judge Cohn was vice chair- man of the Allied Jewish Cam- paign and a leader of the Attor- neys Section of the Campaign's Professional Service Division. He has served as treasurer of Federa- tion and as chairman of the JWF National and Community Rela- tions Agencies budgeting and planning division. Judge Cohn is a past vice president and executive commit- tee member of the Jewish Com- munity Council and is on the boards of United Jewish Charities and the Fresh Air Society. Among his local civic duties, Judge Cohn has served as director of the Detroit Bar Association and as chairman of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and the De- troit Board of Police Commission- ers. Newly elected members of Fed- eration's Executive Committee include Peter Alter and Stuart E. Hertzberg. Judge rules against nativity scene The city of Birmingham will be without a nativity scene in front of As city hall this holiday season as a result of a federal judge's rul- ing against the display. Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled last week that the nativity scene was religious in nature and vio- lated the principle of separation of church and state. The ruling came down on the side of the American Civil Liber- ties Union, which opposed the erection of the display. Reacting to the judge's decision, Rev. James Lyons, executive di- rector of the Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies said, "I support Judge Taylor's ruling. For me, religion is an extremely important part of life. When other judges rule, as was recently done, that the creche is not a religious symbol but a cultural one, I think it shows the problem of trivializ- ing the religious experience." In a related development, Samuel Greenberg, national commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, criticized the National Park Serv- ice for its proposed inclusion of a nativity scene in the federally- sponsored Christmas Pageant of Peace. In a letter to Russell E. Dicken- son, National park Service direc- tor, Greenberg stated that the JWV "has a long-standing policy of opposing any government spon- sored religious activity and finds the proposed inclusion of a creche in a federally-sponsored presenta- tion unacceptable." Greenberg urged the NPS to re- consider its plan and to remove any overt religious symbols from its display. CHAIM benefit tickets available ...... ' ' tlitlaL€L= 28585 Telegraph Rd.
