THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS New BB chairman to keynote dinner Edwin Shapiro, the newly ap- pointed chairman of the B'nai B'rith International Hillel Com- mission, will deliver the keynote address at the B'nai B'rith Great American Traditions Award dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Westin Hotel. Dayna Eubanks, anchor woman and reporter for WXYZ- TV, will usher in the more than 60 members on the dais who ware all leaders in the corporate world both locally and throughout the country. Honorees are: Bernard M. Fauber and David Handleman. The general chairman is Alan E. Schwartz. Concert and recording artist Barry Manilow will perform. The dinner will benefit the B'nai B'rith Youth Serving Agen- cies. B'nai B'rith has been providing outreach programs for young people since 1924 when it formed the first B'nai B'rith Youth Organization chapter in Omaha, Neb., and the first Hillel Founda- tion at the University of Illinois. The B'nai B'rith Youth Organ- ization is today the world's largest international youth movement, serving more than 35,000 teena- gers in the United States, Canada and a dozen other countries. Its American and Canadian mem- bership represents 40 percent of all the young people in both coun- tries who participate in Jewish youth programs. The' Michigan Region BBYO has more than 1,300 actively in- volved high school students and is one of the most viable districts in the country. This past summer more than 60 members from this area joined 200 others throughout the nation for a six-week study progr4m. B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, with houses or extension . offices on more than 400 college cam- puses around the world, annually comes in contact with an esti- mated 300,000 Jewish college students. Hillel directors provide them with everything from meals and entertainment to personal counseling, Bible studies and learning experiences. Michigan has a Hillel house on four of the major campuses. In 1938, B'nai B'rith added its Career and Counseling Service to help young people plan for their future. Today, B'nai B'rith Career and Counseling Service main- tains offices in four northeastern states, providing professional counseling and testing services for moderate fees.
