Religious politics
vs.political religiOn

BY DR. MARC H. TANENBAUM

\

III New Modern

Special to The Jewish News

The assassination of Indira
Gandhi, India's prime minister,
by her Sikh bodyguards if the
latest testimony to the destruct-
ive power of religious politics and
politcal religion.
In the Chicago Tribune, two
weeks ago, a reporter listed four-
teen political assassinations or at-
tempted assassinations during
the last four years. In addition to
the killing of Mrs. Gandhi, these
included the assassination of
Egyptian President Sadat,
President-elect Bashir Giemayel
of Lebanon, an Iranian President
and Prime Minister, and the at-
tempt on the lives of Pope John
Paul II and British Prime Minis-
ter Thatcher.
As you analyze this frightening
epidemic of violence, you see
someting of a pattern emerge. In
almost every instance, you find a
mixture of fundamental religion
and political fanaticism trigger-
ing the explosion. Fundamen-
talist religion claims a monopoly
on truth and virtue, and attri-
butes vice and everything venal to
the "outsider." It becomes the
engine of political fanaticism. The
end justifies the means. Murder
and assassinatin are approved as
doing "God's will" of purifying the
world. The words tolerance and
co-existence simply do not exist in
the fanatic's vocabulary.
That is why it is so critical for
Americans to wake up to what is
happening in our own country.
Religious fanatics and political
zealots who want to remake
America into their "Christian
country" must be resisted by an
aroused American electorate.
The answer to theocracy is to
strengthen our pluralist democ-
racy.

The lines are so elegant Seiko repeats them in the
dials for an on-going look of beautiful bracelets that
tell time, slim and glowing in gold-tone or silver-
and-gold-tone. A very coveted, very current look,
definitely to be continued into the classic category.
