Group voices concer
over CBC coverage

Toronto (JTA) — The Canadian
Jewish congress (CJC), while
strongly supporting the license
renewal of the publicly funded
Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
(CBC), has expressed some con-
cerns over its ethnocultural
coverage and hiring practices
with respect to minority groups in
Canada.
In a submission to the Cana-
dian Radio and Television Com-
mission (CRTC), the organization
recommended that CBC televi-
sion interpret its mandate to
"play a role in ensuring that all
ethnocultural groups live in har-
mony and equality with the two
dominant cultures" in Canada
which are anglo-Saxon and
French.
The submission provided an
analysis of instances where the
CJC found CBC wanting. They
include coverage of events of na-
tional importance to the various
ethnocultural communities that
have been covered only during
crisis periods or as colorful
backdrops to specific events.

Washington (JTA) — The
Washington Post, quoting "Pen-
tagon sources," said Tuesday that
the U.S. military "made detailed
preparations" recently to launch a
retaliatory strike in Lebanon in
what the newspaper described as
the most advanced example to
date of a new, tougher policy
toward terrorism.
"The aircraft carrier USS
Eisenhower" the Post said, "was
ordered shortly before Thanksgiv-
ing to hold her position in the cen-
tral Mediterranean so she could
launch a retaliatory strike if in-
telligence warnings about new
terrorist attacks on the U.S. and
British embassies in Beirut pro-
ved out.
The navy preparations, accord-
ing to the Post, included flying
extra A6E bombers to the carrier
and briefing crews on what
targets to strike.

PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN'S MESSAGE TO ZOA

THE WHITE HOUSE

rri

WASHINGTON

October 26, 1984

I am pleased to send my warm greetings -to all those gathered for the 84th
National Convention of the Zionist Organization of America, the oldest Zionist
Organization in the United States.

Yours is an organization very close to my heart, for since 1948 Israel's
well-being has been of tremendous importance to me. I have always viewed
Zionism as a fundamental aspiration of the Jewish people and I decry those
who would equate the beauty of Zionism with the ugliness of racism. With the
creation of the State of Israel, Jews have been able to reinstate self-
government in their historic homeland. It is the fulfillment of a 2,000-year
dream that Jews can now freely live in a Jewish state.

Israel is a nation whose pioneering spirit and ability to meet tremendous
challenges have earned its citizens the respect of all Americans. Support for
Israel, our sister democracy, strategic ally, and close friend, is in our tradition
as a Western democracy and in our best interests as a member of the Free
World.

Rome library named
for child killed
in synagogue attack

For all these reasons, the work of the Zionist Organization of America is
highly important. Through your many programs here and in Israel, you help
strengthen U.S.-Israeli relations. Your ZOA house in Tel Aviv is a center for
American culture in Israel and your Masada Youth Movement sends hun-
dreds of American students to Israel each summer for study and travel.

Rome (JTA) — A new library,
dedicated to the heroes and mar-
tyrs who fought and died for
democracy and freedom, will be
named in memory of Stefano
Michael Tache Gaj, the two year-
old Jewish child killed in the ter-
rorist attack on Rome's main
synagogue on Oct. 9, 1982.
The library, containing books
on the Mussolini era and the Nazi
occupation of Italy, will be inau-
gurated Saturday in the Rome
offices of the Italian National
Association of Families of Mar-
tyre (ANFIM). The organization
has declared Stefano to be an in-
nocent martyr in the struggle for
human dignity which claimed the
lives of many of his forebears and

I am proud that my Administration instituted genuine strategic cooperation
and is close to finalizing the first Free Trade Agreement between the United
States and Israel, and I am grateful for your support of these steps. These two
initiatives are evidence of the ever-growing cooperation between America
and Israel and the satisfying benefits we derive from each other.

which continues in the post-war
world.
