-Jwn5scmemnwasmoa THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, November 30, 1984 "HONOR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER" (Exodus 20:12) An article in the November 23 Detroit Jewish News entitled "Council Maverick" quoted Detroit City Councilman Mel Ravitz, in his discussion of his father Samuel Ravitz now deceased, thus: "He was not doctrinaire and we had many discussions about religion" said Ravitz. "I think my father continued a religious life partly for Social Reasons." We, the undersigned, who knew Samuel Ravitz want to set the record straight, since Samuel Ravitz passed away, almost 4 years ago, and cannot defend himself. Samuel Ravitz was a proud and positive Jew. He was a member of Congregation B'nai David for a half century. As President of the B'nai David Men's Club he sponsored Scouting, and was Scout Leader of Troop #135. As Chairman of B'nai David's Youth Group, he inspired them to join the Youth Tanis and Tphillen Club, and he saw many of these youth become leaders of the Jewish Community throughout the years. Samuel Ravitz's dedication to Jewish life and culture was outstanding. As Secretary of the Synagogue, as a member of its Board of Trustees for many years and as a leader of the Maot Chitim Fund Drive before Passover annually, he inspired us all. Sam attended services with us on the Sabbath and all holi- days. He loves his people and he loved his God and he involved himself in every aspect of Jewish Life and thought. May the memory and many good deeds of this fine man and good Jew continue to be an inspiration to us all. Phillip Bolton, President Fred Ferber, 1st Vice Pres. Nick Gonte, 2nd Vice Pres.
