Greece seen moving
towards Arabs

Jerusalem (JTA) -- Israel ac-
cused Greece last week of taking a
pro-Arab position in the Middle
East and demanded that it recon-
sider its promise to promote the
interests of Syria and Jordan
among its fellow members of the
European Economic Community
(EEC).
The Israelis were reacting to
the statement of Prime Minister
Andreas Papandreou, on his re-
turn to Athens from a visit to
Syria and Jordan earlier this
month, that Greece would under-
take the role of mediator between
the Arab world and the EEC. He
said he had asked Syria and Jor-
dan for a working paper he could
present at the EEC summit meet-
ing in Dublin next month that
could lead to a new EEC initiative
in the Middle East.
Avi Pazner, a spokesman for
the Foreign Ministry, told report-
ers that he was surprised to hear
that Papandreou plans to speak
on behalf of Syria and Jordan at
the EEC summit.

Who wants
it anyway?
a

Iran-Iraq peace
bad for Israel?

Jerusalem (JTA) — The end of
the war between Iraq and Iran,
whenever it comes, could pose a
serious danger for Israel, accord-
ing to Yitzhak Oron, director of
the Center for Political Research
at the Foreign Ministry.
As long as the two countries,
both sworn enemies of Israel, are
at each other's throats, Israel's
interests benefit, but once the war
ends Israel may be faced with a
stronger Iraqi army, Oron told the
Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Se-
curity Committee last week. The
Iraqi army will comprise 10 di-
visions more than it had prior to
the war with Iran, he said and a
strong Iraqi-Syrian front might
be formed against Israel.
