The Nov. 16 news story, "Egyp-
tian official reported on way to Is-
rael for talks," mentions the Taba
border dispute, negotiations over
which were broken off by Egypt in
1982. The background of the Taba
dispute is very interesting and
sheds light on Egypt-Israel rela-
tions in general and on the peace
talks in particular.
After the return of the Sinai by
Israel, Taba was the one remain-
ing territorial difference between
Egypt and Israel. Taba had been
nothing more than a waterhole
and a grove of trees in the arid
surroundings until Israel began
to develop it after the Six-Day
War of 1967. The Israelis want to
hold on to this beautiful and

never fails him. I refer to his
"Purely Commentary" of Oct. 26.
in which he refers to Detroiter
Alex Taub. his connections with
the Technion, and his conference
with David Ben-Gurion.
I was host to Taub when he vis-
ited Israel in 1953. and arranged
the press conference at which he
made his suggestion for local
production of alcohol from wild
vegetation. Taub demonstrated
the feasibility of using alcohol as a
source of power, but the energy
crisis had not yet become acute,
and the press ridiculed his idea. A
columnist for Haaretz wrote the
following satire on the proposal.:
"The longed-for day arrived.
The planning was very efficient
and everyone began to travel on
alcohol. Government Ministers
travel on cherry brandy, high offi-
cials on Carmel Hock, and the
general public on spritz. The oil
from the Negev drilling is re-
served for cigarette lighters only.
"I go into the street and see a
Dan bus moving along with ele-
gant ease. The driver is very satis-
fied and from time to time,
through a special tube, takes a
taste to see if he has enough fuel.
The train runs without rails and
the engine belches mightily at
each station. All the problems of
industry are solved. Vodka is put
into the engines, and a sandwich
with a pickle is added. The work-
ers lie around and sleep after re-
ceiving fuel for their own con-
sumption. The international ex-
pert, too, lies there and snores at
intervals."
