come Detroit's first major
black mayoral, candidate.
Ravitz feared that he, a lib-
eral, and Austin would split
the same voter base, with both
losing in the primary. He was
probably right. Austin won
the primary but lost in the
runoff to Roman S. Gribbs,
now a Michigan Court of Ap-
peals judge. Ravitz observes,

in 1973, but he finished third
in the primary, behind John
Nichols, the former Detroit
police commissioner, and
Coleman Young, who won his
first four-year term in the
general election.
Ravitz' decision cost him his
seat on the Council — he could

much better but I think I was
getting a little bored. I missed
the kind of controversy and
challenge of the public aspects
of political' life."
In 1981, he ran again for the
City Council and apparently
had maintained sufficient
name identification as well as
a constituency to win back a
Council seat.
But things are not the same.
