not come up at all," he said.
"Very occasionally, I receive a
snide letter or telephone call
and that's all."
In another paper written by
Ravitz — "Impressions of a
Sociologist Turned Political
Candidate" — he chides his
fellow "intellectuals" for lack
of involvement in the political
process. He cites many reasons
for their arms length ap-
proach, concluding:
".•. intellectuals are will-
ing to discuss politics and
analyze it, but basically they
are unwilling to immerse

themselves in it because they
do not really know how to
apply the concepts they_ma-
nipulate verbally." At .the
time, Ravitz was viewed as a
liberal, and was even de-
scribed by some as radical. He
enjoyed UAW support both for
his politics and for his teach-
ings at Wayne State.
One of the courses I taught
was attended by many UAW
members who later became
leaders, including Doug
Fraser (later the union's
president)," said Ravitz. They
knew my thinking but I was
not one of their members."

Council, Ravitz had the repu-
tation as a sincere, articulate
and well-intentioned politi-
cian who seemed to take the
issues somewhat too seriously.
His demeanor was always pro-
fessorial and he appeared to
feel every issue — no matter
how minor — very deeply,
perhaps too deeply to be con-
tinually politically effective.
In 1969, he dropped a few
hints at possibly running for
mayor and might have fol-
lowed through had not
