He cites many reasons for their arms length ap- proach, concluding: ".•. intellectuals are will- ing to discuss politics and analyze it, but basically they are unwilling to immerse themselves in it because they do not really know how to apply the concepts they_ma- nipulate verbally." At .the time, Ravitz was viewed as a liberal, and was even de- scribed by some as radical. He enjoyed UAW support both for his politics and for his teach- ings at Wayne State.
