LARGE SELECTION OF MEN'S AND BOYS'
Heart and home
Continued from preceding page
the Soviet Union before they
emigrated to the United
States, are not afraid of doing
"dirty work. Some of the inde-
licacies of the problems that
old people have don't throw
them."
Liza Razdolsky, who came to
the United States in 1978, has
been a housekeeper in the
Group Apartments for about a
year. While she hasn't become
an intimate friend with the
women she helps to care for
("after all, this is my job"), she
has developed feelings of
closeness and concern for her
charges.
The job here is close to the
profession that I was trained
for in Russia," she said. "I am a
teacher, and in a way, I am
teaching these women how to
get along in this situation."
-ne.PaillimitagifiS17r6WEI,-"-
she still hopes of someday
landing a job as a bonafide
educator. "I would like to wind
up in class teaching children,
but my English isn't good
enough yet," she said, admit-
ting that making a living
comes first and the English
that she has learned thus far
was picked up by ear, rather
than in a classroom.
The housekeepers work
about pve hours a day, five -
days a week, Baum explains.
However, in the men's apart-
ments, they often stay a little
longer to handle such things
as cooking and laundry. The
emigres also help out during
parties and other social activi-
ties, sometimes sharing their
experiences with - residents,
many of whom were immig-
rants to this country in an-
other era.
The spirit of cooperation
that flows between the resi-
dents and the staffers is some-
thing that Baum hoped for,
but couldn't predict, when the
Group Apartments project was
launched five years ago. A
common comment among ten-
ants is that when they moved
in, the staffers "did whatever
was possible" to help make
them comfortable in their new
environment. And that, re-
gardless of the way Herman
Boraks feels, is no accident.
Physician honored
The American College of Physi-
cians (ACP) announced that Dr.
Steven Burt Rubin has been _
elected to fellowship in the
60,000-member national medical
specialty society. Dr. Rubin, a
specialist in pulmonary medicine,
will be honored during the convo-
cation ceremony at the college's
annual session in Washington,
D.C. in March.
