THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, November 16, 1984 55 "Where the Gypsies play" RED DEVIL NOTEBOOK Times change. During the years of Jewish mass immigration no one in the. United States would have dreamed of suggesting that Yiddish should be included in the curriculum of the American' school system. Immigrant Jewish. parents who wanted their children to learn Yiddish, or study Jewish culture and history, sent the children to Jewish afternoon schools main- tained by the Workmen's Circle and other groups of Jewish im- migrants. They — and everybody , else in the country — looked upon the public elementary and high scnoots as iriatitutions for edifcat- ing children in English only, the language of the country. Today, more than $150 million in federal, state and municipal al- locations are being spent an- nually to meet the special educa- tional needs of linguistically different children in the nation. It is estimated that more than 300,000 children are participat- ing in the bilingual/bicultural programs in more than 65 lan- guages and dialects % primarily in the Spanish language, but also in Japanese, Korean, Russian, Armenian, French, Italian, Greek and other languages. The biling- ual bicultural centers for teachers have libraries and extensive col- lections of materials for bilingual programs. There is a sharp division of opinion among legislators, educators and civil. rights ac- tivists with regard to-curricula. in Spanish, in addition to English, in the public school system. Many believe that children of immig- rant families should be taught in English only, so that they can master the English language ear- lier and bring it into their homes, thus enabling their parents to be- come Americanized in shorter time. Others insist that bilingual education of children of immig- rants would help the children in maintaining their native lan- guage, their ethnic culture, and also advance their general educa- tion. There are about 20 million His- panics in the U.S. today and they constitute nearly seven percent of America's population. • OPEN 7 DAYS • LUNCHES • DINNERS • BANQUETS • COCKTAILS Distinctive Dining at- Reasonable Prices Daily Seafood Specials You Know That . . They were brought up in the Russian language. For these children there are bilingual courses of Jewish con- tent in a number of public schools, especially in New York where al- most a half of the newcomers set- tled. There is a textbook, The World Around Us, with material in English parallel to Russian pub- lished with funds provided under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It seeks to fulfill the need in programs and mate- rials that provide a cultural change in general American and Jewish directions for Jewish im- migrant children from Russia. • Gypsy Orchestra • Cocktails Fine Food Since 1933 5 minutes from downtown • On 1-75 freeway at exit 45 • 1001 Springwells Ave. Specializing in HIGHLY RATED BY DETROIT'S LEADING NEWSPAPERS VOTED DETROIT'S BEST ROUND PIZZA OPEN SUNDAYS 12 NOON "Like no other restaurant in America" I LIGHTED PARKING WITH ATTENDANT BY BORIS SMOLAR Special to The Jewish News Lunch & Dinner Detroit's World Famous HUNGARIAN VILLAGE Italian-American Restaurant 15837 FENKELL, 1 BLK.
