Book reviews 'Rosenberg File'
The execution of Julius and
Ethel Rosenberg more than three
decades ago'remains an agonizing
public issue.
The government charged, with
FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover having
played an important role in the
accusations, that the theft of "the
secret" of the atomic bomb defi-
nitely justified the charge of
treason for which the couple was

electrocuted. It was charged that
the Rosenbergs were responsible
for ending America's nuclear
monopoly.
The charge by those who con-
tinue to express distress over the
execution is that it was a
government-sponsored conspi-
racy.
A thorough examination of the
case is provided in The Rosenberg

File (Vintage Books, a division of
Random House) by Ronald
Radosh and Joyce Milton.
An updated edition of The
Rosenberg File has been issued.
The book contains a resume of the
extensive government files which
were opened under the Freedom of
Information Act. Hundreds of in-
terviews with interested people
were utilized by the authors to
draw six major conclusions:
• Julius Rosenberg did play a
central part in the Soviet espion-
age ring and transmitted mate-
rial he believed contained impor-
tant secrets.
• The British atomic scientist
Klaus Fuchs had already passed
these secrets to the Russians, but
David
brother,
Ethel's
Greenglass, provided confirma-
tion of the information.
• Ethel was not deeply in-
volved, but knew of her husband's
activities and may have typed the
notes he passed on.
• The FBI deliberately exag-
gerated her role and insisted that
the prosecutors demand the death
penalty in order to increase their
leverage with her husband to
cooperate.
• Some of the evidence was
highly questionable and probably
false.
• Nearly all those involved,
from the KGB to the FBI, even to
some of the Rosenbergs' "defen-
ders" were willing to see the
Rosenbergs die so their case could
be used to serve partisan inter-
ests.

Mesorah Publications' Com-
plete ArtScroll Siddur, briefly re-
ferred to in a Jewish News review
Oct. 19, has been reissued as a
paperback.
Although it is a 1,000-page edi-
tion, it serves as a pocket book
volume. It adds impressively to
the increasing bookshelf of
Mesorah publications.

IF YOU EVER bump into
George Burns, ask him how he
cured his throat problem .. .
Many years ago, George was
troubled by having to clear his
throat before every sentence .. .
He went to one doctor after an-
other . . . no one could help him.
Finally, someone told him
about a little-known doctor on
New York's lower East Side .. .
The medic listened to George ex-
plain his problem, then stood up
and walked slowly around the
room . . . "Doctor," Burns asked
impatiently, "do you think you
can help me?" . . . "Of course," the
doctor replied. The next time you
feel like you're going to clear your
throat, don't do it!"
