serious coverage it gives to
Libya's Kadhafi who, while the
subject of criticism, emerges as a
legitimate leader.
Perhaps the strangest article in
the October 1984 issue of this
journal is an interview with
Khaled al-Hassan, consisting of
1 excerpts from a speech the
I "president of the Foreign Rela-
tions Committee of the PLO" gave
in Tunis in August. The title of
al-Hassan's talk is "Democracy
and the PLO."
Mr. al-Hassan writes about the
I decision of the PLO to adopt the
concepts of democracy "as the
basis for relations between the
various political organizations
and popular federations in their
cooperative action as a broad na-
tional front and also in their
I dealings with the Palestinian
people."
(It is interesting to note that
al-Hassan omits mention of the
fate of Issam Sartawi, a PLO dove
who was murdered last year for
trying to express his "democratic"
view.)
In its coverage of Israel, Africa,
, Asia is predictably vitriolic al-
\ though the magazine clothes its
-venom in parliamentary lan-
guage. In the October issue, Ghazi
Sarhane speculates that the new
government of national unity in
Israel differs little from the prev-
ious one in its "racist" attitude
towards Palestinians and that the
new coalition "could be a tempta-
tion to new adventurism."
The charge that Israel is a ra-
cist state appears frequently in al
Fajr Jerusalem Palestinian
Weekly, an English language ver-
sion of a Jerusalem publication
which originates in Washington.
_In tabloid newspaper format, Al
Fajr is available from news kiosks
in New York City.
