Ethiopia famine
relief sought
In response to the growing
hunger crisis in Ethiopia, the
American Jewish Joint Distribu- -
tion Committee (JDC) has ex-
panded its efforts in that country
and is now accepting contribu-
tions for famine relief together
with Christian agencies which
make up the Interfaith Hunger
Appeal.
The JDC, whose ongoing pro-
grams of relief to Jewish com-
munities in some 30 countries are
made possible, in part, by the con-
tributions from the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, has been work-
ing this year in Ethiopia's Gondar
Province in the development of!
health services. Previous JDC‘
emergency efforts were under-
taken in Cambodia (1980), Italy
(1981) and Lebanon (1982).
Contributions earmarked for
famine relief in Ethiopia should*

Middletown, N.Y. (JTA) —
Life-long Zionist activist Dr.
Mordecai Hacohen, now first vice - 1
president of Bank Leumi Trust
Company of New York, urged a
Hadassah audience Monday to
"demand" that every Jewish child
in America be assured of a Jewish L
education, "even free of charge,
whenever necessary."
Dr. Hacohen issued his appeal
at a brunch of the Lower New
York State Hadassah region, at
which he received the regional
Hadassah's Myrtle Wreath
award.
Canadian poet's
`Book of Mercy'
Leonard Cohen established a
splendid record as a poet in his
home city of Montreal and in the
entire Canadian Jewish commu-
nity. With his latest work,Book of
Mercy, published by Vintage
Books, a division of Random
House, he is adding to the acclaim
already earned in this country as
well.
Cohen has also gained a wide
reputation as a song writer.
His poems indicate legacies
from the Psalms and are inspira-
tional in their humanism. There
is a religious contemplation that
adds immensely to the values in
Book of Mercy.
IDF unveils new tank
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israel
Defense Force armored corps has
unveiled its new Merkava tank,
Mark Two, an improvement on
the original Israeli-designed and
produced battle tank which pro-
ved successful in the Lebanon
war. The corps also disclosed it
had started using a new improved
shell in its tank guns, which had
been developed and put into prod-
uction since the start of the Leba-
non war.
