Floating Heart
because of the hotel in which they
resided. In the United States,
Chafets observed, "By 1975, the
number of liberal American pun-
dits such as Anthony Lewis had
joined conservatives such as
Evans and Novak as constant de-
tractors of Israel."
In searching for an explanation,
Chafets traces the roots of the ero-
sion of Israel's image as an under-
dog to the 1967 war when it so
swiftly defeated Egypt, Syria and
Jordan, recaptured East
Jerusalem and took over the West
Bank. The Arab oil embargo in
the, wake of the 1973 war with
Egypt — a military victory but a
poitical debacle for Israel — made
the United States government
and American business execu-
tives more conscious of the
strategic and industrial implica-
tions of Persian Gulf oil. The Yom
Kippur War, he believes, initated
"the decade of hostility" in much
of the media.
Begin's election as Prime
Minister, Chafets points out, led
to a conception of his administra-
tion as rigid, intransigent and un-
compromising while, on the other
hand, the PLO, despite the at-
rocities about which it boasted,
began to be pictured as amenable
for settlement. It was a period in
which every PLO statement was
mined for the rainbow pot of com-
promise and "recognition" of Is-
rael.
Then, too, according to Chafets,
Israel became the victim of its
own democratic, openness and ac-
cessibility. He writes:
"While most of the Middle east
is shrouded in self-imposed sec-
recy, few nations are as open —
and as closely scrutinized by out-
siders — as Israel. A small army
of foreign correspondents resides
in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, far
more than are stationed in the
entire Arab world, and they pro-
vide an enormous amount of
media coverage for thy' Jewish
state. During the past ten years
no other foreign nation, with the
exception of the Soviet Union, has
been the subject of so much
American air time and news-
print."
Thus Israel is depicted with all
its warts and blemishes while
those among its foes are unre-
vealed because the press —n
foreign and well as domestic — is
suppressed and intimidated in its
neighboring Arab states.
Chafets lists several actions of
Syria and the PLO, including
kidnapping and murder of report-
ers, that were used to intimidate
Western reporters.
